Principal's Corner
Dear Orca Families and Students,
I hope everyone had a wonderful month of January and welcome to February! Thank you for your support of Orlando Science Schools! This week's newsletter is packed with many exciting announcements and reminders!
I like to share with another great news from our senior class! Please join me to congratulate two Senior Orcas on getting accepted into some of the nation's great colleges. Ilias B. got accepted to University of South California and Micah B. got accepted to Georgia Institute of Technology. According to U.S. News peer assessment survey of top academics in 2020, USC is ranking #22 and GaTech #29 in National Universities. Congratulations to both students and I wish you the best in your post-secondary journey.
Our 2020 testing calendar is out this week! Please check the important date and your course examinations from the list. Please use this calendar when planning your spring vacations, doctor appointments, etc. and be present in campus on the testing days.

OSHS 3rd Quarter Parent Teacher Night Conference Nights dates have been set, please review the PTC corner found in this week's newsletter for dates and information regarding the sign-up process. As always, it is important to remember that if these dates and times do not work for you, or if all spots become filled, you may always contact your student's teachers to arrange an appointment for another date and time.
In the month of February OSHS is excited to celebrate Black History Month! Each week we will feature one influential African-American in the newsletter. You can also learn more about Orlando area events celebrating prominent African Americans, like the Zora Neale Hurston Festival.
Please join me to congratulate OSS Math department, Head Coach, Mr. Akyalcin, and the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, for hosting January Regional at the home. It was a huge success with approximately 600 participants from 24 high schools across the State.
This week, students demonstrated their best projects at the school-wide Science Fair! 23 projects will be competing at the Dr. Nelson Ying Orange County Science Fair in February! Congratulations to students and teachers for this hard work!
Congratulations to Samyukta and Aiden for placing in the top two for our school-wide spelling bee. Samyukta will go on to represent OSS in the county-wide spelling bee.
Have a safe and wonderful weekend and we will see you on Monday!

science fair weekly update
OSS’s 10th Annual School Science Fair was a great success! About 60 projects in 13 different categories from 6th and 7th grade were displayed. Judges were very impressed with the quality of the projects and how great of a job students did explaining their findings. It was a STEM filled experience for all participants!
Congratulations to the following students for placing in their categories and advancing to the county level! They will be representing Orlando Science Schools at the Ying Expo on February 13th. We are so very proud of our ORCAs!

30/30 DISMISSAL RULE
What is Delayed Dismissal? 30/30 Rule?
The “30/30 Rule" is a Delayed Dismissal Weather procedure that is nationally recognized. It is required that the “30/30 Rule” be enacted by the school if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Orlando Science Middle/High follows this rule.
When 30/30 Rule is implemented, students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes has passed from the last sound of thunder. However, parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child/children during delayed dismissal, will be allowed to sign out their child/children at the cafeteria or front office.
In order to pick up your student(s) from the cafeteria or front office during this procedure, parents/guardians must bring their dismissal sign to the front door of the school to sign their child/children out. If you do not have a dismissal sign, you will need to provide a picture ID and be on the school pick-up list to pick-up the child/children. Bus riders will be delivered home when conditions are all safe for dismissal.
An automated telephone and/or email message will be used to notify parents/guardians about delayed dismissals. Always be sure to update the school when your phone or email information changes. Thank you for your cooperation on our students’ safety.
