Principal's Corner
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Student Drop-off Safety
We understand that everyone is in a hurry in the morning to drop off their child at school, so they can proceed to their daily activities. However, it is important to remind you to use caution while driving in the school parking lot, as well as on Greendale Ave.
Recently we have a had several situations that have caused an unsafe environment. We have had parents stopping in the middle of Oakton Street to drop their child off. Also on Greendale Avenue, cars are stopping in the right-hand turn lane, to drop off their students. These actions caused a traffic jam.
This week, a van accidentally bumped a student walking in the parking lot. Thankfully the student was not injured.
We are asking you to please follow the rules of the road and drive cautiously as you arrive and depart from Emerson. It is for everyone’s safety.
Uncle Pete’s Lunches
On Tues, April 17th, Emerson will be sponsoring a community outreach called ‘Uncle Pete’s Lunches.’ This group allows us to support local charities that serve less fortunate people. Students were given lunch bags during homeroom and asked to fill the bags with specific items. Last year, we collected 776 lunches and are hoping to surpass this amount this year.
I am challenging Emerson to beat 776 lunches. If we reach over 500 lunches, I will allow students to throw pies at me during lunch. If we go over 800 lunches, I will go in a dunk tank. If every student brings in just one lunch, we will be over the goal.
Girls Volleyball Season
Congratulations to our seventh and eighth grade girls’ volleyball teams on their outstanding season. The seventh grade girls were 9-5 in conference play this year. In the MCSL conference tournament the seventh graders took 3rd place defeating Friendship and then Lincoln. The girls also gained great volleyball experience by playing in the Sweetheart Tournament in Arlington Heights.
The eighth grade girls’ volleyball team held a conference record of 12-2. They were the top seed for the conference tournament and beat Chippewa Middle School in two games for the championship.
Sixth Grade Olympics
This week, our sixth grade students are participating in Emerson’s annual Olympic Festival. This festival is always very memorable for students. They are placed in a “City State,” and have increased their knowledge regarding ancient Greece, along with building close relationships with each other. As part of the Olympic simulation, the sixth grade students raise money through a coin war, which will be donated to Emerson’s Special Olympics Team and the Special Olympics Foundation. I would like to thank all our sixth grade teachers for producing the monumental task of organization and learning, as well as to the parents who are supporting the events.
Eighth Grade Information:
Each year, District 64 Elementary Learning Foundation sponsors the Judith Snow Ethical Leadership Award. All eighth grade students are eligible to submit an application for this prestigious award. Information about this can be found on the ELF website, also hard copies are available in Emerson’s office.
Emerson’s eighth grade promotion dance will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room on Fri., May 18, 2018, from 7- 9:30pm. The PTO and administration will be working hard to provide a memorable event for the eighth grade students who attend.
As always, most questions regarding the dance relate to proper student attire. It is our desire that students’ appearance be age-appropriate, tasteful, and adheres to the regular school dress code policy. The parameters we have established for the dance are as follows:
1. As with any after school event, students must be in attendance throughout the school day in order to attend the dance.
2. Boys traditionally wear a sport coat, dress slacks, shirt and tie or a suit along with dress shoes. The sport coat or suit is optional however, and we ask boys minimally come in a dress shirt, tie, dress pants, and nice shoes.
3. Girls have traditionally come in a dress or skirt and blouse with dress shoes. Strapless, backless, tube tops, or dresses that reveal the midriff are not permitted at the dance. The length of the skirt or dress should be school appropriate.
4. Spaghetti straps and one-side sleeveless dresses are permitted, but the dress should cover the body appropriately.
We are looking forward to our promotion dance as well as the promotion ceremony on May 31, 2018. Information regarding the eighth grade promotion exercises and tickets will be coming shortly. I will send an email blast to eighth grade parents when the promotion tickets will be mailed home.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jim Morrison
