The Quill 4-2-21
Creating Opportunities Together
A Thought or Two From Mr. Nieslanik
In my role, I am often functioning four to six months ahead of the school's calendar, but this year I seem to be functioning four or five days ahead of the community. So much of my work is planning for the future and putting decisions into play that directly impact both instruction and activities. I often feel as if I am just ahead of the curve, as this pattern of work is so foreign to me. With this said, I hope to give you in this edition of The Quill an updated scenario of what our instructional model will look like once we move into Hybrid instruction and share as many details as possible. I will follow up this week's edition of The Quill with another next Friday, and then another on Friday 4/16.
I hope to share information that is timely and purposeful. I also hope to share our Return to Campus plan in a manner that is thoughtful and understandable, but in my communications, if you should have any further questions, please reach out. We are here to answer your questions. Please reach out to us at 503-356-2890. I can also best be reached via email at David_Nieslanik@beaverton.k12.or.us.
Take care, be well
David
Hybrid Information and Updates
We are building our final plans and will be sharing all protocols and safety measures starting in next week's edition of The Quill, via social media, and via letter. We want to make sure we deliver the necessary information to all families, and we apologize if we repeat information. Our ultimate goal is to make sure that students, staff, guardians and community understand the safety protocols and systems we have put in place.
This week's updates:
- We are still building our plan with the expectation of six feet between students in classrooms and public spaces. This means that our classrooms can hold up to 16 students, our science and performance based classrooms 20 students, and our gyms up to 60 students. We are getting close to the 16-student cap in some classrooms. If we cross this threshold we will look at utilizing larger spaces. We have not been given guidance or the expectation to shift our planning to 3 feet social distancing. This decision would not be made at the building level.
- As of today the breakdown of attendance patterns is:
CDL: 50.6%, In-Person Hybrid (IPH): 49.4%
Freshman: CDL-44%, IPH: 56%
Sophomores: CDL-48%, IPH: 52%
Juniors: CDL-54%, IPH: 46%
Seniors: CDL-57%, IPH: 43%
- You can change to and from In-Person Hybrid by calling SRHS at 503-356-2890.
- With the shift of us no longer having to conduct a visual check of students entering the building we will now use period attendance for contact tracing. Students will continue to use a QR code to checkout to go to the restroom, to leave the classroom on personal business, and at lunch. This will help us monitor movement and location of student.
- Students will continue to be expected to use their pre-defined restrooms. We have created options for our populations who use different restrooms than the general student body. We have also built in protocols for privacy and access for our students who have asked for such supports.
- Mask wearing is required when on school district property. We are creating a list of students who will be exempt from wearing a mask due to documented reason.
- We just received a shipment of face masks and hand sanitizer that will be available for all students. In addition, we are providing an SRHS cloth face mask for all students and staff.
- There will now be a hot lunch entree available for students. This lunch option will be delivered in a grab-n-go back, and students will be able to eat with disposable utensils.
- We have measured the fishbowl and can sit 82 students in the fishbowl, with another 100 spread along the main hallway and front foyer. We will need roughly 175 seats for students inside the building per lunch. We are also opening the entire outside plaza, memorial and football field for lunch.
- Students will be expected to go straight to class upon arrival, and if a student has late arrival or early dismissal we ask students to either arrive right before class begins and leave white when class is complete.
- The bell schedule has been finalized and is below.

Annual Student Survey
High school students will be surveyed this year by accessing a link through a Canvas announcement. The survey will be available in English and Spanish. The survey window is March 30-June 4. SRHS will survey our student body in April once the Forecasting Process is complete.
Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Student surveys of middle and high schools include three optional questions for students to identify their gender, ethnicity / race, and sexual orientation. These questions allow for additional levels of analysis of questions on inclusion, safety and bullying.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school under the Annual Surveys tab and is posted at https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/accountabiity/research-reports
After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify Sho Shigeoka or Southridge High Schoool at 503-356-2890.
