Picture Yourself Growing in First Grade
Celebrating Published Authors!!!
As we began to prepare for publishing, we had a countdown that we updated daily to help build excitement and keep us focused on the task at hand - fixing up and fancying up our writing! Using checklists and partners, we edited our stories to make them ready to share with the world. We visited the computer lab to create beautiful title pages for our stories. We learned more about Microsoft word and the features, typing, and inserting images! Once our books were complete, we were ready to share and celebrate them!
We created our own bookstore, and we created different sections in our classroom based on the topics and interests of our stories. We invited Mrs. Schaffer's class to join us for book readings! We smiled and laughed as we shared and discussed our non-fiction chapter books! A successful and GREAT day all around!

Collections Needed!!
We are getting ready to begin a new writing unit! Over the next few weeks, we will learn how to write about our opinions and to give reasons for them. To help us learn, you will need to bring a collection of things to school.
A collection can be a group of legos, a group of sea shells, a group of hair clips, or any other group that you would like to bring to school. Your collection should have between 5 and 7 items in it. I will bring a collection too – I think I’ll bring 6 of my favorite Princess figurines (the request of my 4 year old daughter)!
Here are a few guidelines for your collections:
1. The collection should have between 5 and 7 objects of the same type (example: acorns, or stickers, or erasers, or baseball cards, etc).
2. The collection will need to stay in our classroom for about 2 weeks.
3. The objects should be small enough to come to school in a gallon-sized ziplock bag or a small shoebox.
4. All collection bags or boxes should be clearly labeled with your name.
Collections are due by Wednesday, February 11th! If you have any questions, please let me know! If needed, I can help you think of an idea for your collection!
Thanks in advance for your help!
#MysterySKYPE
On Monday, we had a FIRST in First Grade! We were able to connect with a class from New Hanover, NJ via Skype! Using Skype, we were able to video conference with this class right through our SCREEN! We talked to the students, saw their classrooms, and met their teachers! It was exciting and amazing!
We connected with this second grade class to play a game of Mystery Number! Mystery Number Skype is a game where both classes pick a mystery number and take turns asking yes or no questions to figure out the mystery number! This game is great for building number sense, reinforcing place value, using math vocabulary (ex. greater than, even and odd), and problem solving! Not to mention, it is really fun meeting a new class and seeing other students in the country and their classrooms. It builds a global awareness as we realize other students are learning the same things that we are and that they are important!
We prepared by thinking about what would make a good questions to help us narrow down our hunt for a mystery number. We thought about questions like "Is your number a 2 digit number?" "Does your number have a 5 in the tens place?" "Is your number even?" After brainstorming questions, we practiced using our number grid to help us keep track of all of our clues by crossing out numbers.
We had a GREAT time playing and we guessed the other class's number first! We have another Mystery Number Skype set up for next week with a class from Louisiana!!
