DELAYED DISMISSAL - MONDAY, 8/21
As you know, on Monday, August 21, a solar eclipse will be visible (weather permitting) across all of North America. The eclipse is expected to be viewable in Atlanta from 1:02 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a total eclipse occurring at approximately 2:30 to 2:40 p.m. Because this timing overlaps with dismissal, APS will delay dismissal by 30 minutes for all students.
We expect every classroom to use this rare opportunity to engage our students in instruction. Our teaching and learning team has made available various grade-band-specific activities and instructional lessons for teachers. Additionally, the district has ordered more than 50,000 special purpose filters known as “eclipse glasses” for students and staff to safely view the eclipse. Those glasses will be delivered to your school prior to August 21.
Schools will receive letters to send home to parents. Safety is paramount for all students and staff. You may find a list of safety tips here. If parents have concerns with their children viewing the eclipse, we will provide them an option to not participate.
