Principal's Corner
This time, I am coming to you candidly with a very important request. Through the years, one wonderful characteristic of our school has always been that our students and staff felt safe. Safety is not only the condition of feeling protected from a physical danger; safety is also having the peace of mind needed to focus on what truly is important at the school.
I am sad to report that this school year, our students' overall behavior has declined and it is affecting our school culture. Some of our students don't feel safe because they know that someone, today at the school, will call them an ugly name, will make fun of them for no reason, or will put their hands on them in class, or during recess, or in the cafeteria.
I don't know which side of this sad situation your child is; I don't know if your child is being picked on or if your child is the one others are afraid of. But I do know that if we all work together as a community, we can make our school a safe place for everyone.
I am asking you, I am begging you to please to have regular conversations with your child about this topic. Talk to them about empathy and how important is to help each other feel welcome and safe. Take your time to sit with your child and ask them to reflect on their day, if there was any decision that they made that caused someone else to feel sad, if they have made fun of someone unnecessarily, if they have pushed another student for no reason, if they have used some words that they shouldn't. Please share with them that empathy and love can really make a difference, and that being caring is always more rewarding than to be unkind.
I hope you don't find this message offensive or naive. This is simply a principal who loves all his children and is sad to see that many of them are quietly suffering and don't know what else to do to feel safe, happy and loved.
Your still proud principal,
Sergio Delgado
