How would you like your nickname to be, “The Great One”? This was the nickname given to Wayne Gretzky. Wayne Gretzky was not just the best player to ever play in the NHL, but he also proved that you can be the best and break many records if you follow your dreams.

Wayne Gretzky was the best player to ever play ice Hockey, and he broke many records. Gretzky was born in Ontario, Canada in 1961 and started skating when he was 2 years old. He spent many hours on the ice and by the time he was in high school, he was drafted by the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League. He played his first full NHL season, 1979-1980, for the Edmonton Oilers. Wayne Gretzky played twenty seasons in the National Hockey League for four teams from 1979 to 1999. Those four teams were the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, and the New York Rangers. Wayne Gretzky retired on April 18, 1999 at age 38. His Oiler jersey, number 99, was retired by the National Hockey League to honor his contributions to the sport.

Gretzky impacted the history of the game in many ways, both on and off the ice. On the ice, Gretzky was to much to handle for defenders, and goalies. He was a skilled skater who could change his body position quickly to maneuver around the net, fake out his opponents and score. He could deliver difficult passes always sending the puck to exactly the spot where he knew his teammate would be. Gretzky also had great shooting accuracy and was able to make tricky shots into the net and score! Off the ice, Wayne Gretzky was a great representative and promoter of the sport of hockey. He was a role model for many, living his life with discipline and dignity. Gretzky was a true team player who had strong concentration and a desire to succeed.

Also among his many records are most career goals (894) and most career assists (1,963). By the time Wayne Gretzky was a teenager, he was already breaking records in Canada. Gretzky always found a way to make his entries in the record book unique. Gretzky won 6 All-Star records, 4 Stanley cups with the Edmonton Oilers, and won 9 MVP awards! Wayne Gretzky’s entire career was spent making new records, many of which may never be broken!

Wayne Gretzky more than lived up to his nickname, “The Great One”. He was the greatest hockey player of all time and the NHL’s all-time scoring leader in goals, assists, and points. To me he is a Renaissance figure because he was a true leader, a star athlete, and a role model to all. Gretzky is quoted as saying “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take”! This is true in the game of hockey as well as the game of life. Gretzky was a person who tried his best every game and proved that if you work hard you can accomplish your dreams!
