2016 District Science Fair
The Sweetwater District Science Fair had nearly 200 students from 12 district schools participate in this year’s competition! Each year the top middle and high school projects in the Life Sciences and Physical Sciences are awarded Sweepstakes prizes.
This year’s high school Sweepstakes Award in the Physical Sciences goes to Bonita Vista High students Aleksander Komatina and Ala Zeidan. The high school Life Sciences Sweepstakes went to Leib Lipowsky also from Bonita Vista High.
The middle school Physical Science Sweepstakes went to Angelica Moreno from National City Middle and the Life Sciences Sweepstakes award went to Joaquin Castillo, Jr. also from National City Middle. There were fun hands-on activities and all of the participants were recognized for their hard work.

27th Anniversary Scholarship
Program Announcement
For the past twenty-six years an important part of the San Diego Air & Space Museum's mission has been to inspire students to tackle challenges of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines, and to make a difference in the world through an innovative, adventurous spirit.
The Museum has announced its 27th Anniversary scholarship program to further this goal. Last year fourteen students were selected from the San Diego region, receiving a total of $48,000 in scholarships.
Scholarships are given annually on behalf of four Museum administered scholarship funds: Bill Gibbs, R.A. Rearwin, Jennings Kelly Scarborough, and the Convair Alumni Association, as well as a special San Diego Air & Space Museum STEM scholarship. Over the past 26 years, 268 talented San Diego County high school graduating seniors have received a total of $759,000 in scholarships.

Two-year Grant to Support the Implementation of PLTW

Verizon has partnered with PLTW to offer middle schools nationwide the opportunity to apply for a two-year grant to support the implementation of PLTW Gateway’s new specialization units – Introduction to Computer Science I (ICS I) and Introduction to Computer Science II (ICS II). Schools must demonstrate a Free and Reduced Lunch Program eligible student population of 70% or greater.
Grant funds may be used to help offset the following implementation expenses: • PLTW Gateway program participation fees • ICS teacher training expenses • Designated equipment costs including tablets, computers, wireless connectivity, accessories
Eligibility Requirements
Please read and ensure all of the eligibility requirements are met prior to applying. This is a competitive application process and applicants are not guaranteed funding.
· Must be a middle school located within the United States
· Must have a Free and Reduced Lunch Program eligible student population of 70% or greater

UCSD Middle and High School Science and Technology Summer 2016 Workshops
UCSD’s 2016 StudentTECH is open for registration!
Courses are now available for this coming summer at the UCSD San Diego Supercomputer Center. Courses range from everything from introductory formal programming and animation classes to photoshop. These courses are expected to fill up quickly. If you know of a middle/high school student or community member in the district who could benefit from a one week intensive workshop, sign-up with the link below.
Courses range from up to $260 each.
Fundraising opportunities are available.
Courses are Monday through Friday, 8:30am-3:00pm.
All materials are included.

2016 Teacher Workshops in Conservation Science
Conservation Science Workshop with the San Diego Zoo!
Join us this summer for a 4-day, 3-night workshop for middle and high school life science teachers, held at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research in Escondido, CA.
Our program offers teachers the opportunity to study the science of saving species, all while gathering stories, activities, and lessons framed in the context of conservation science. Educators and scientists come together at the largest zoo-based research facility in the world for a one-of-a-kind, hands-on, behind-the-scenes experience in wildlife
conservation!
Centennial Young Conservationist Scholarship Award
We would like to invite you to nominate a student for a scholarship award our organization is offering as part of our 100 year celebration.
San Diego Zoo Global is proud to announce the Centennial Young Conservationist Scholarship Award. As we celebrate 100 years of dedication to wildlife conservation, this new award is designed to recognize and support the outstanding conservation-related efforts of one next generation wildlife hero. Award candidates must be nominated by an educator (middle school, high school, or college) during the course of their high school or undergraduate program. The award includes a commemorative plaque and $5,000 scholarship check to be presented at the San Diego Zoo on the morning of Endangered Species Day (May 20th, 2016). The winning applicant must commit to attend the awards ceremony on May 20th.

2016 LSSI-Amgen Teacher Program
The San Diego Workforce Partnership and Southern California Biotechnology Center at SD Miramar College is pleased to announce that the application for the 2016 LSSI-Amgen Teacher Program is now available.

The LSSI-Amgen Teacher Program features:
- First-hand biotech techniques that are being used by scientists in the field of biotechnology using the Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) Curriculum (amgenbiotechexperience.com)
- On-going support for curriculum implementation, including loaner equipment and supplies
- Industry visits to biotechnology companies and interaction with science professionals
- Option to purchase continuing education units from Cal State San Marcos Extended Learning
- $500 one-time stipend for implementation of one or more labs in a classroom located within San Diego County during the 2016-2017 academic school year.

Carrie Northrum
Carrie was selected as the Chapter 118 (San Diego) STEM teacher of the year. She was also later selected as the California Air Force Association Region 3 Teacher of the Year. She was recognized at their chapter meeting and was given a $1000 award.
