The Last Kingdom Playlist

Inspired by the novel by Bernard Cornwell

Playlist Overview

This playlist was made for The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell. It is the first book in a series of historical novels that follow a young Saxon prince as he experiences the danish invasion.

These songs are mostly of classical or folk genre because of the historical period and medieval/"viking" setting.

Song 1: "Dragonborn" by Jeremy Soule

Lyrics: http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Song_of_the_Dragonborn#Lyrics

This is the theme song from the video game "Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim", the song is like a call to arms just as the beginning of the book calls the army together to fight the Danes, this song inspires and gathers for victory. The lyrics won't help you much, they are from an entirely new language created for the game.

Song 2: "If I had a Heart" by Fever Ray

With it being the theme to the television series, "Vikings", its only appropriate that it fits in the part where the Danes go "Viking" and raid the land. Perhaps this isn't what "Viking" music sounded like, but it definitely gives some war time vibes.

Song 3: "Helvegen (The Way To Hel)" by Wardruna

Lyrics: http://lyrics.wikia.com/wiki/Wardruna:Helvegen

At this point in the story Uhtred begins to "fall" in certain ways. The Danes have taken him as one of their own and teach them their pagan ways, and much rowdier traditions. On the plus side he becomes rugged, strong, and skilled in battle. He joins the Danes as they conquer England and thus begins his "Descent into hell" by fighting his own people.

Song 4: "The Ecstasy of Gold" by Ennio Morricone

Lyrics: (Instrumental)

I realize this is a western tune, however this song is rather epic, it would go great with the quickly rising climax of the young prince battling a legendary warrior who was once his ally. So, this may not be a western, but it deserves a song for the comparable showdown.
