From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
We've had a great start to the final term of this school year! It's wonderful to see everyone still smiling and giving it their very best even as the year is wrapping up.
I encourage everyone to get a good night sleep this week as MAP testing will take place Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. This is a great chance for students to see just how much they've grown since sitting for the MAP tests at the beginning of the school year. Please speak with your children about putting in their full effort on these exams. You can find more details about MAP testing within the newsletter.
Have a great weekend!

2019 SDL Showcase Event
Dear CDS Community,
CDS cordially invites parents, students, teachers, and community members to attend our first annual Self Determined Learning (SDL) Evening Showcase Event.
This will be a very special evening celebrating the time, effort, and hard work our 7th and 8th graders have put into their Self Determined Learning course during the second half of the school year. Students will be exhibiting their work, and giving TEDx style presentations on a variety of meaningful topics.
By showing up, you are playing a significant role in their learning by being an "authentic audience." Research shows that students are more committed to their work when it will be shared with others. As such, we encourage you to come out and show your support.
Food and drink will be provided. Please RSVP below in order for event organizers to properly plan for food/space purposes.

MAP Growth Testing - Spring 2019
Dear Parents,
We want students to do their very best on these exams so that results are accurate representations of their current level of achievement. Teachers use the data from these exams to modify their instruction and better serve your children. If the data isn't reliable, it is more difficult for teachers to target the specific skills your child needs to develop.
Having a conversation with your child about the MAP test will go a long way in ensuring they are motivated to do their best.
If you have any questions or concerns about MAP testing, please feel free to make an appointment with me (Mr. Scoville)... or your child's English or Math teacher.
2019 CDS MS Athletic Banquet
Announcing the 2019 CDS Athletic Banquet!
On Thursday, May 16th CDS will host the 4th Annual Athletic Banquet! All students that played on any Middle School sports teams this year are invited to come and celebrate!
Dinner will be served free of charge in a buffet style from 5:00-6:00 PM in the Phoenix Cafe, followed by an Awards Ceremony in the Dalton Hall from 6:00-7:00 PM. All parents of athletes are welcome to join at 6:00 PM for the Awards Ceremony!
Although many students will be winning individual awards, every team will have a chance to be recognized on stage for their contributions throughout this school year! There will be a lot of prize giveaways throughout the night so please join us for this fun event to wrap up our athletic calendar for the 2018-19 school year!
Students are asked to RSVP by returning the slip on the bottom of their Athletic Banquet invitation. This in turn makes them eligible to win the grand prize! Keep in mind it is a formal event, so please come dressed to impress. Thank you and hope to see you all there!
2019 CDS Athletic Banquet

Grade 4 Transition
On Monday, Mr. Scoville and 5th grade House Teachers began with an orientation of middle school life and norms at CDS followed by a panel of 5-7th grade students for a Q&A session.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, 5th grade mentors led their mentees through a typical day of a MS student; going through House, classes, lunch, and lab. We hope that this transition week was beneficial to the 4th graders and we look forward to welcoming them as 5th graders in the next school year.

CDS MS Students Published in Youth Literary Journal!
What makes this truly exciting is that several CDS students were published in the journal! These students brainstormed, drafted, wrote, edited, and ultimately submitted these pieces to various literary journals, and Selah Youth was more than happy to publish these works. Artwork, poetry, and fiction was published, and students are already looking to submit new pieces. The pieces can also be found online here. Way to go 7th graders!

<Publishing the collection of students’ works>
Same as last year, we are preparing to publish the collection of hard-working writing works of students they have done in Korean class. Middle school students have been working on various projects over the 2018-19 School Year, and all of students’ results have been summed up and expressed by their writings. The fifth grade included journals, letters, folktales, explanatory writings and biography. The sixth grade included cartoons, stereotyping stories, writing letters to a character in novels and interview. The seventh grade included essay, autobiography, conflict of novels and imitative poems in their writings. Last, the eighth grade contained essay writings, speech writings, point of view of novels and a creating poems. On the last page, we made an extra space to have students write warm messages to each other. I encouraged students to make their own cover designs, and thankfully many students devoted their time and energy to create it. By looking at this book, students will be able to discover that their thoughts have grown a lot over the past year.
