A Look at Our Week
We continue to enjoy getting to know your children! I have been spending time with your child individually as I've been assessing their incoming reading levels. We have also enjoyed learning more about each child through our Writing Workshop. Each day we write a book about our "Lucky Leader", learning how to write our friend's name and about their interests. Check your child's folder daily in anticipation of the arrival of their book!
We have been reading many stories, including "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle, and "Alexander and the No Good, Terrible, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst. We are learning about colors. and how to read the words that describe them and about how to read text as a Chorus.
After assessing many of your children's reading levels, it is apparent that we need to work hard on letter recognition, and first sounds of words. Each day we have Fundations, where we associate letters with keywords that start with the same letter, and their corresponding sounds. This week's letter/keyword/sounds are" N - nut -/n/" and "M-Man-/m/". Previous week's letters/keyword/sounds are "B - bat -b" and "F - fun -f" and "T-top-/t/". Ask your child about them, and look for the letters n and m in any signs you pass by this week, and point out any words that you say that begin with t,b,f,n or m.
I will be sending home one book to read each night on Tuesday through Thursday. The first book and sight word baggy will be given out at Tuesday's open house, and the procedure will be explained that evening. Many of your children have reported to me that they have an in-built HW time at their afterschool provider, and that they are expected to have HW to complete during that time. For that reason, I will send a worksheet in your child's folder a couple of times each week that will reinforce sight words, colors, counting and letter writing. These are optional, the only required HW for your child is practicing the sight words, and reading the book in the baggy each night with them.
In Math each day we have been matching buttons and attribute blocks that share characteristics, as well as counting objects in a Counting Jar and making equivalent sets of objects. Enlist your child's help whenever counting out dollar bills at the store! Grocery shopping is the perfect time to practice math skills such as counting, and reading skills when looking at labels/signs.
Please send back any outstanding paperwork.
