During the week of December 17th, we will be decorating gingerbread men and gingerbread houses! It will be lots of fun! We incorporate the story of the Gingerbread Man into our Language Arts block. Today your child will be bringing home a half sheet of paper with 1-3 items on it that we need donated to the class for these fun activities. These are due to school on Thursday, December 13th.
GINGERBREAD HOUSE PARTY!
We need volunteers to help with our Gingerbread House decorating party. This will take place directly before the Winter Party on Thursday, December 20th from 12:45 - 1:45. To sign up, please click the link below. Please note that this is NOT the same as the PTA Winter Party volunteer sign up. If you want to volunteer for that as well, you will need to sign up on the PTA Winter Party sign up link.

Lost and Found
Also, this is a good time to make sure that all jackets, coats, lunchboxes, water bottles, etc...have a name on them! If there is a name, it is more likely to be returned to the owner.
Bronco Press
Bronco Press is a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their writing talents by publishing a book. Bronco Press is open to all students in kindergarten through 5th grade. The Bronco Press template and step by step instructions can be found on the PTA website http://www.barksdalepta.org Follow the link, PTA will then bind the books. All student authors will be presented with their bound books at a special author’s reception. What a wonderful treasure and keepsake! The Bronco Press is a part of the principal’s triathlon recognition program.
Six Flags READ TO SUCCEED Program
Once again Barksdale will be participating in the Six Flags Read to Succeed reading incentive program. It’s very simple. Students are to record their reading minutes over the next weeks and months. When they have completed 6 hours worth of reading, then they may turn in their recording log and will receive a FREE Six Flags ticket for the summer.
**Students may count the minutes they read weekly for 1st grade! Just record the minutes in both their reading log and the Six Flags form.**
Reading logs will be due Friday, March 1st. Tickets will then be received some time in May.
Students can begin now to record their reading minutes. Anything counts!! Reading at school, reading at home, parents reading to the students
What We're Learning
Language Arts & Social Studies
This week in language arts, we have been learning about author's purpose. Did the author write the story to entertain us, persuade us to do something, or to inform us? We are also continuing our study of pronouns. In writer's workshop, we have been learning how to revise our writing by adding a word, phrase, or sentence to our writing to make it better. We're also continuing to stress using spaces, capital letters and correct punctuation.
In social studies, we've been learning about culture and holidays we celebrate. Mrs. Edwards , librarian, introduced the students to a great research site for K-2 students called Pebble Go. The students will be using it over the next few weeks to research a multitude of different holidays.
Math
Next week we will be focusing on solid, three dimensional shapes. We will also begin talking about equal parts.
Science
In science, we are in the middle of our first engineering unit. This week, students have been designing and testing sails along with beginning to design windmill blades. Next week, students will continue to work as mechanical engineers to design and construct windmill blades that use wind energy to do work. Students will show their learning by designing, creating, testing, and redesigning windmill blades.
