Notes from the Principal (Mrs. Boyd)
At the early childhood and elementary age, we adults are the greatest models for our kids. (At age 12, that shifts to peers, so we have to use our time well!). In addition to modeling things like how to read, how to make beds, how to do dishes, we also model how to respond to curveballs that life throws our way. We can model productive ways to manage stress, conflict, fear, and anger (to name a few) as well as character traits like responsibility. They're hungry with curiosity.
Here are some ideas:
- Stress/Fear: As you see tragedy in the news, look for the people helping. Talk about the people helping. (That tip comes from Mr. Rogers).
- Fear: Kids often think of bravery as something that superheros have. But bravery is shown in daily life all the time. "I'm nervous about this meeting. But I'm going to be brave, and do the best I can."
- Conflict: Use "I Messages." "Kids, I feel crazy when you all yell at the table like that, and I've had a hard day. Please stop."
- Conflict/Anger: Apologize. None of us are perfect. "I'm sorry I yelled at you like that. I was frustrated because I said the same thing 3 times and you didn't listen. What can we do to prevent that problem in the future?" (Note--I have this conversation about every 6-8 weeks with my eldest).
- Responsibility: Think out loud. "Man, I'm exhausted. But I said that I'd make brownies for the bake sale tomorrow, and don't want to let them down. I want them to know I mean my word. So I'm going to get up and do it."
At this age, kids are sponges for adults in their lives. Here's to making the most of it.
Fun Holiday "Homework"
1) Make lists of gifts to buy for others (one way to practice empathy is by thinking about gifts that would be perfect for other people)
2) Write thank you cards
3) Write name cards for place settings if you get fancy for dinners
4) Help measure when cooking (older kids can be responsible for doubling recipes--this is great practice with fractions!)
5) Create a plan/itinerary/schedule for what they want to do on one of the days off.
Take a picture of your child doing one of these things between now and January 1st and email it to mboyd@greenfield.k12.wi.us. Each picture will be an "entry", and January 3rd we'll have a drawing for a lucky student or two to have lunch with me!

Health Room Items Needed
Edgewood Home and School Association (our version of PTO)
Santa's breakfast is tomorrow! The Holiday Shoppe is open to all students 9:30-11:30. You do not need to attend Santa's breakfast to come and shop. Items for purchase are $1-$10 and volunteers are available to help your child shop.
There will be an EHSA meeting on Tuesday, December 10th 6:30 PM in the learning commons. This is a great opportunity to hear from Edgewood staff about the happenings at our school. Mrs. Boyd gives a principal update, classroom teachers present what "respectful, responsible and confident thinkers" look like at their grade level, and parents and staff work together to plan future events. Meetings are only one hour and childcare is available for school age children.
We hope to reach our fundraising goal for the school sign this spring. We are planning a family movie night, St. Patrick's Day Dance, and spring walkathon. New ideas are welcome and your support through participation, donations and volunteering is always appreciated. Thank you!
