Causes
Life Outlooks and Complications
Complications of spina bifida can range from minor problems to extreme problems. The problems depends on how big the hole is in the baby's back. If it is a higher malformation, it will be a greater amount of nerve damage and loss of muscle function. Also babies who have spina bifida will have bladder problems. Some babies can have spina bifida and not experience and complications and they can grow up like nothing was wrong. As for others, some get disabilities from this.
Testing and Treatment
Treatment for spina bifida depends on the severity of the condition. Most people with spina bifida require no treatment at all. Children who have meningocele require surgery. Children who have myelomeningocele require lifelong treatment. Almost all of them survive with appropriate treatment soon after birth.
