Women In Combat

Victoria Stikeleather

Women being in combat is a controversial topic that has been argued for years. The issue goes all the way back to the Civil War, when women disguised themselves as men to be able to fight. Some believe that it's not a woman's place to go into battle. While others believe women have the same rights as men and should be able to practice those rights freely. People have been fighting to get the restrictions of women roles dropped for years and in 2015 all gender roles in the military were dropped. Though the restrictions were dropped society still has a problem with women going into combat. I chose this topic because it interests me to see how women are treated differently because of their gender. I believe the brave women who want to fight for this country should be able to do so, without any discrimination.

Toby Keith "American Soldier" (2003)

Toby Keith - American Soldier
Toby Keith's, "American Solider" is a patriotic song about how brave, powerful, and selfless our American military is. I chose this song because the lyrics portray how truly selfless our soldiers are, especially our women who are mothers, that leave their sons and daughters to fight for our nation.

Beyoncé "Run the World" (2011)

Beyoncé - Run the World (Girls)
About 10 percent of the U.S. Forces currently serving in Afghanistan and Iraq are women. In most nation's military, women are excluded in serving. America's military however, being the powerhouse that is, also allows women to serve. Not only do they serve, but they also take leadership roles as officers who lead the strongest military in the world.

Christina Aguilera "Fighter" (2002)

Christina Aguilera - Fighter
This song, exemplifies how allowing women into leadership roles in the military as changed the status quo in America. More than 300,000 women who have served to date in Iraq and Afghanistan, about 9,000 have earned their branches equivalent of the combat action ribbon. Women were once thought of as a housewives who were incapable of the physical requirements of serving in the military, however now women are seen as "fighters".

Alicia Keys "Girl on Fire" (2012)

Alicia Keys - Girl On Fire
I chose this song because gender equality in America has slowly evolved over time for women to have the same rights as men. Although, it has been a long battle from women attaining voting rights in the 1920's to all gender roles being dropped in December of 2015. Women have been "on fire" with fighting for the same rights as men, and have won the fight for the cause.

Martina McBride "Independence Day" (1993)

Martina McBride - Independence Day
This song is about how a woman is abused by her husband and in the end she gets free. The song reminds me of how women were held back by gender roles in the military. Women were set separate roles than the roles of men. On December 3rd 2015 gender roles in the military were dropped giving women the equal rights as men.

Kelly Clarkson "Stronger" (2011)

Kelly Clarkson - Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)
As long as women qualify and meet the standards, they can do the same roles as men can. In our generation, it is more socially acceptable for women to be physically fit, by lifting weights, Crossfit, etc. A few decades ago it was not as acceptable for women to have muscles, workout, and definitely not meet the physical and mental requirements our military sets for our soldiers.

Ciara "Like A Boy" (2009)

Ciara - Like A Boy (Official Video)

During the Civil War, women were not allowed to be in combat. Even though it was illegal for women to fight, there were many brave women who disguised themselves to fight as men. Women wanted to fight in the war for the same reasons as men, so that would support their views, and to be able to leave home and be with their husbands. I picked this song because she talks about how she could do the things boys can do.

Tim McGraw "If You're Reading This" (2007)

If You're Reading This- Tim McGraw w/ Lyrics
This song is a "letter" from soldier who has died in battle telling their family a final goodbye. I chose this song to remember the men and WOMEN who have fought and died for our country. In 2012 at least 139 women have died from combat in either Afghanistan or Iraq. I think its very important to remember all the brave soldiers who fight for our freedom.

Miranda Lambert "Gunpowder and Lead" (2007)

Miranda Lambert- Gunpowder And Lead (With lyrics)
A woman who signs up to protect her country is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. Not only are women soldiers more likely to face sexual abuse they can also be physically and emotionally abused. A study showed that in 2004 1 out of 3 women soldiers were sexually assaulted, 71 percent of which never reported it when it happened. I chose this song because its talking about a man hitting a woman and how she is going to put a stop to it with her "Gunpowder and Lead". I think more women soldiers need to stand up for themselves and never let a man touch them.

Rachel Platten "Fight Song" (2015)

Rachel Platten - Fight Song (Official Video)
This song reminds me of how we can overcome obstacles if we just stick to our dreams. In 1901-1908 with the determination of women, the Army Nurse Corps and the Navy Nurse Corps was created to be the first women military. With women fighting for the equal right to defend our country we have come a long way through the years.
