New Last Day of School
Tuesday, June 8, 2021, is currently scheduled to be the last day of school for D56 students. Please know that there will be no class that day as we will be using a Remote Learning Planning Day to complete our work on addressing identified and anticipated Learning Loss as a result of the pandemic. The last day of In Person or Remote Instruction will be June 7, 2021. Most importantly, June 8 will also be the day we will collect student devices. Gurnee District 56 will be providing our students with new devices this fall. Part of our process includes collecting the current devices. We work with an outside vendor who purchases our old devices. The funds from the sale go towards offsetting the cost of the new devices.
Each school will be providing information as to how the device return will work at their site. Please watch for this information to be shared in the coming weeks.
Learning Recovery Program
We have started to design a Learning Recovery Program with the goal of providing services over the coming two to three years to provide additional support to students who demonstrate gaps in learning as a result of a lack of access to In Person instruction over all or part of the past two school years. As a part of the the Elementary and Secondary Emergency Relief Funds, the government will be providing districts with the necessary funds to create short-term programming. We have not received the particulars as to the time period the money will become available for our use and that timeline will directly impact our program opportunities. We recognize that both teachers and students need time to recharge and recover. We know time away from devices is critical for many. We also know that we will not be able to close every gap over a matter of weeks. It is our hope that we will be able to provide these supports over the next two to three years including time during summer, in school, after school, and online. More information about our Learning Recovery Program will be shared in the coming weeks.

Viking All Day Kiddos Earth Day Clean Up
Mrs. Albers organized an all-day Earth Day Cleanup. Armed with bags, gloves, and of course their masks, the students spent their midday outside cleaning up FIFTEEN bags of garbage, a plethora of lost tennis balls, a couple of soccer balls, football, and volleyballs. The students and Mrs. Albers recently discovered many ducks and geese attempting to navigate their way through the many years of accumulated debris in hopes of making homes, so they took advantage of “Earth Day” to do their part in the community and at Viking School! All the hardworking students will be handsomely rewarded by Mrs. Albers with a pizza party on Friday during lunch!
