Mrs. Poliszczuk's First Grade Class
weekly update
April 29, 2016
This week in reading, students practiced reading and writing words with the /ow/ sound as in cow, spelled ow and ou. We also practiced when to use the articles a, an, this and that.
In reading, we finished reading the story Thomas Edison, Inventor and identified the important details. Students will use their notes to create a time line.
In math, we began Unit 8, Addition, Subtraction and the Number System. (We are not completing Unit 7, per BCPS curriculum. All of those skills are already addressed daily in calendar math.) Students practiced reading and writing numbers from 1-120. Students also explored patterns on a hundreds chart by identifying what numbers were missing on the chart.
In Social Studies, students identified ways they can reduce garbage in order to protect our environment. Students also created a Wixie to give examples of jobs where people earn an income.
We had a wonderful art lesson today from Mrs. Williamson. Kylie's Mom visited our classroom today as part of our "Picture Parent" program. Students learned about the artist, Paul Cezanne, best known for his still life paintings. After the lesson, students were able to create their own still life.
