Sunday Message
December 2-6
Principal's Message
Pleasant Union Families:
I hope you had a fantastic holiday and were able to spend time with your family. December will be a very exciting month at Pleasant Union. On December 2, we welcome our new school counselor, Ms. Jordan Smith. She is excited to meet students, staff, and families. She will reach out very soon with information regarding her plan to establish a comprehensive school counseling program at Pleasant Union.
Please also mark your calendars for the Giving Market. This kicks off on Wednesday, December 4. The Giving Market will be open until Thursday, December 12. This will be located in the Maker Space. Giving Market hours are from 9:30-1:00.
The Pleasant Union staff routinely engages in conversations about continuous improvement of our school. Our staff has engaged in discussions about common expectations for student behavior. We want every student at PUE to understand expectations for their behavior in the classroom, cafeteria, playground, hallways, bathrooms and throughout the school. Our students are the leaders of the future and we want their behavior to always reflect that they are respectful and responsible citizens. Our staff will review school-wide expectations and classroom expectations with students as needed. Additionally, per Wake County Public School System policy 4309, we have developed a team of staff that will help us implement this important work.
The team members are:
Kiley Brown, Principal
Kayla Perry, Assistant Principal (Team Leader)
Stephanie Coleman, Instructional Facilitator
Jasmin Traughber, School Psychologist
Rachel Haley, 5th Grade, Track 2
Braedan Copeland, Kindergarten Instructional Assistant, Track 2
Sarah Fry, Media Specialist
This team will be responsible for:
- Creating and teaching school-wide expectations
- Developing systems and structures to implement expectations
- Providing acknowledgment and feedback around these expectations
- Collect and analyze data using data-based problem solving for student support and fidelity of implementation
- Developing a system for continuous feedback for all stakeholders
When students do not meet behavioral expectations, consequences and supports will be put into place. Per policy, we will implement:
- Prevention strategies - additional structure and predictability
- Teaching strategies - additional instruction/time for student skill development
- Reinforcement strategies - opportunity for feedback
Minor inappropriate student behavior could include:
Talking out at inappropriate times
Work avoidance
Lying to school staff
These behaviors will be handled in the classroom by the teacher. Appropriate teaching strategies and/or consequences will be provided by the teacher based on the behavior. The teacher will communicate with parents regarding the behavior.
Major student behavior that is inappropriate could include:
Bullying
Cheating
Physical aggression
School administration would respond to these behaviors and promptly communicate with parents. Consequences could range from loss of privileges, parent/teacher conference, behavior intervention plan, time spent in the office, in-school or out-of-school suspension depending on the behavior. Supports from our School Counselor and/or School Psychologist are also available when needed. Our goal is to put consequences and supports in place to re-teach so that students adjust their behavior if it is inappropriate.

Readvolution
For the third consecutive year, we will partner with the Carolina Hurricanes to bring READvolution to all of our elementary schools. This exciting partnership will support a community-wide literacy campaign around daily reading outside of school, plus allow students the chance to attend a Hurricanes game. This year the READvolution time frame will be between Monday, Sept. 30 and Friday, Dec. 13, 2019. Students will be able to be part of this event by reading daily for 20 minutes! Parents will log their students reading times on the online log in. We appreciate this opportunity to build lifelong readers and learners in our community.
