Principal Note
What a Week!
This has certainly been an interesting week, as a majority of D303 staff received their second COVID-19 vaccination. I continue to praise our Mustang students, who showed staff members empathy and kindness by demonstrating The Mustang Way (Respectful, Responsible, Problem-Solvers), as many teachers and staff weren’t feeling 100%. This week our students and staff demonstrated great problem-solving skills, as flexibility was the name of the game. As we approach the one year mark of transitioning to remote instruction last March 13th, I couldn’t be more proud of the community we are, and the community we’ve become. It’s been an interesting week, encased inside an interesting year. I want to thank all of our parents’ continued support for what we are trying to accomplish as a community…..it doesn’t go unnoticed.
Illinois Assessment of Readiness
This week all parents of 3rd-5th grade students should have received detailed information about the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, which is the state test that assesses student readiness in the spring each year. In-Person and remote families received separate/different communications. For remote parents, the information came via email from Denise Liechty on Monday, while in-person learners received a communication from me on Monday as well.
I will share the testing schedule with in-person families by the end of next week.
5 Essentials Parent Survey
The 5Essentials survey is currently open for parents. To date, we have had 75 Munhall parents submit surveys. Thank you!! I can assure parents the feedback is extremely helpful and it is examined carefully so we can reflect on our practices and structures. Please note, for schools to receive a Parent Report, it must meet a 20% participation threshold, and we are currently at 16%. Please see the information below for additional content regarding the 5 Essentials survey.
District 303 participates in the annual Illinois 5Essentials Survey that collects feedback from our students, teachers, and parents. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will give you the opportunity to share your thoughts on important elements of school effectiveness. The responses will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide our improvement efforts. All responses are confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.
The Parent Survey is currently open and will remain so through April 2, 2021. To take the survey, please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey. As part of this communication, we have included graphics of the login page with additional information about how to access the survey. Most notably, make sure you enter Kane County in the box for county even if your home or your child’s school is in DuPage County. This will allow you to correctly select your child’s school.
All District 303 teachers, as well as students in 4th through 12th grades, are being asked to complete this survey. 5Essentials Reports will be generated for schools if their teachers and/or students meet the response rate threshold of 50 percent. Teachers will work with students to assist them with logging in and taking the student survey.
On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
· Effective Leaders
· Collaborative Teachers
· Involved Families
· Supportive Environments
· Ambitious Instruction
We value your feedback and appreciate you taking the time to provide us with your input.
For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or if you have any questions or concerns, please contact 5Essentials Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or 5essentials@uchicago.edu.
Below you will find an additional link that provides specific information about the login process.

Art News-Yearbook Cover:
We received many submissions for this year's yearbook cover artwork. It was wonderful to see all of the hard work and creativity that went into the designs! Photographs of entries are currently on display on the bulletin board outside of the lunch room, so please remind your students to take a look.
Now that the digital voting of the finalists is officially closed, I am excited to announce the winner. The 2020-2021 yearbook cover will feature the artwork of Samantha Jahnke. Congratulations Samantha! Keep on creating Munhall artists! Replenishing art supplies: Now that we are starting the third trimester, it would be a great time to replenish those glue sticks and coloring supplies, as many are running out or have gotten lost. There are a very limited number of supplies available for students to borrow from the art studio due to COVID, so students primarily use the supplies they have in their desks. Students are welcome to bring in other special art materials from home such as gel pens, oil pastels, etc. to expand their choices. Please email Mrs. Jontz with any questions: kjontz@d303.org
