ThunderRidge Weekly Update

Patterson's Perspective
Grizzly Families -
I hope everyone is staying warm!
Our Student Government has been hard at work preparing for Grizzly Gives next week. This is a huge week for our school community as we join together with our feeder schools, local businesses, and Caruso Family Charities to raise money to help families in need due to medical hardships. Be sure to look at the flyer below to see everything that's going on both at the school and in the community to support this amazing cause. Money raised at the school events and a percentage of sales at the designated restaurants comes back to ThunderRidge for Grizzly Gives week.
Congratulations to our Technology Student Association (TSA) and DECA students as both clubs are participating in state competitions this weekend. Thirty TSA students will compete against kids from across the state in a variety of events including building, programming, flying a drone through an obstacle course, structural design, biotech solutions, architecture, and photography. Fourteen DECA students will be competing in role plays and business presentations. Students placing at the top of their event will earn a spot to attend the international DECA competition in Orlando in April. Best of luck to all of these students!
As always, thank you to all of our staff and students for everything they do!
Enjoy your weekend.

A Message From Our Conselors: Signs of Suicide
Dear Junior Grizzlies and Parent/Guardian(s),
During this challenging year, school staff are working to teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. Douglas County middle and high schools are using a program called SOS Signs of Suicide. The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help.
SOS has been used by thousands of schools for over 20 years. Studies have shown that it effectively teaches students about depression and suicide while reducing the number of students' self-reported suicide attempts.
Through this program, students learn:
that depression is treatable, so they are encouraged to seek help
who they can turn to at school for help, if they need it
how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend
to ACT (Acknowledge, Care, and Tell a trusted adult) if they are concerned about themselves or a friend.
On February 28th and March 21st, junior seminars will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a brief depression screening tool. This tool cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should be referred for evaluation by a mental health professional.
At the end of class, students will complete an exit slip which asks whether they would like to talk to an adult about any concerns. Trained mental health school staff will conduct brief meetings with any student asking to talk.
We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child's participation in this program please contact your student's counselor. If you would like to opt your student out of this program, please click here.
Sincerely,
The TRHS School Counseling Department
