How to Make Thanksgiving Meaningful
As soon as the crisp November air chills our bodies and the aroma of warm apple pie fills our homes, we all know that means one thing: Thanksgiving’s almost here! During this time, many traditions that aren’t as popular throughout the year finally come to life, and with it we should all learn to create some new and worthwhile moments with our families and friends to end the year with this festive gathering. To make this year’s Thanksgiving memorable in ways that are worth it, follow these five tips to add charm to the holiday: Make food together. Food is obviously the biggest aspect of Thanksgiving, and as anyone would know, an abundance of it stuffs not only your mind, but your heart and soul. So to make this year’s dinner live up to your expectations, help your parents out by chopping the carrots for stuffing or making some delicious pumpkin pie (try making it from scratch!!:http://allrecipes.com/recipe/13711/homemade-fresh-pumpkin-pie/). Preparing food with your family in the kitchen together is one of the best ways to get together while being productive, and will create some delicious food along the way. Listen to others. With big dinners comes a variety of people together, with many heated discussions bound to occur. But, this year, instead of engaging in politics with your grandfather, put your opinions to the side and instead smile and nod. Try to focus on listening and just being present, because giving your full attention to someone is one of the greatest gifts you can give. Create a gratitude list. It’s been a whole year since last Thanksgiving, meaning there are a lot of new things in your life that you are now grateful for. Write out all of these things on a piece of paper, and if you’re ever feeling down look back at the list to make your heart a little bit happier. If you want to be extra thankful, send out a thank you card to those who really impacted your year. Put away your phone. Thanksgiving is a time to express gratitude, and even if you are thankful for your phone, it’s good habit to give some breathing room to your daily happenings and engage people near and far in a heartfelt conversation. Listen, learn, laugh. Connect with people face-to-face and heart-to-heart and fill up on fellowship instead of just food. Go outside. Being surrounded in the smell of delicious food may sound like the best thing to happen all year, but it’s important to appreciate things beyond your home. Cozy up in a warm sweater while drinking your favorite coffee, and check out those colorful leaves outside. Learn to truly develop gratitude for everything created that you would normally take for granted, because you might not be able to be thankful for it ever again! Happy Thanksgiving and hope it’s as meaningful as it should be!
The West Chester Thanksgiving Tradition
In West Chester Pennsylvania, there is a very special tradition that helps to bring the community together. For the 34th year in a row, this town is holding its annual three hour Thanksgiving dinner at the West Chester Senior Center. The event is open to everyone, free of charge, and transportation is even provided for people with physical limitations. The day before, volunteers cook donated 20 pound turkeys, and on Thanksgiving day, 150 volunteers serve the food. In addition to the turkey there is stuffing, green beans, cole slaw, cranberry sauce, and dinner rolls.
Ed Campbell, a resident of the area and Air Force veteran has attended the event for many years now. At last year’s event, he said, “It’s nice to get together with people you know or don’t know and have a meal together.”
The people running the show are also quite passionate about the event. Organizer Angel Connolley said,”“Make people feel at home. That’s what it’s all about – family, community and fellowship.”
Is this type of community Thanksgiving meal something that could be implemented here in Greenville? Greenville’s population is more than triple that of West Chester’s, but in the spirit of the holiday, I believe that the people of Greenville could come together to pull an event like this off.
Whether or not this could be done in Greenville, the Tiger Times hopes that the heartwarming tradition helps to get you into the Thanksgiving spirit of gratitude and community.
Tiger Talks: Student Advice Column
Dear Tiger,
What is your favorite food for Thanksgiving?
Definitely Mac & Cheese! Here's a quick and easy homemade recipe to make it: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/11679/homemade-mac-and-cheese/
Dear Tiger,
I have so much homework to do for Thanksgiving break, but I also want to spend time with my family. What do I do?
Both homework and family time are very important. I say you use the before Thanksgiving and the days after to do your homework. Make sure to spend Thanksgiving with your family!
Dear Tiger,
I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving. What should I do over the break?
You could honestly do a lot of things. Go shop on Black Friday, catch up on homework, catch up on sleep (very important!), spend time with your family or host a Friendsgiving!
Dear Tiger,
How can I stay more organized in school?
Organization is a big key to success. I personally have separate folders/notebooks for all of my classes. If you like to take notes on your computer, create separate folders for different classes and within those folders, make different ones for units and chapters. By doing this, it will be easier to find your notes when you need them. Next tip is to use your Agenda! Write down any due dates and special activities you have that week. This will help you to develop some time management skills. My last tip to keep up with organization is to reward yourself. This reinforces you by giving yourself an incentive to continue your organization habit.
Sincerely, Tiger
