60 SECONDS WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT
This past holiday season, SouthPark retailer ‘Where I’m From’ designed an exclusive t-shirt for the Strongsville community. Proceeds from the sales of the shirt went to the Strongsville Education Foundation, and specifically their efforts in bringing field trips back to our students. Special thanks to The Foundation, SouthPark Mall, and ‘Where I’m From’ for this partnership, providing our students memorable experiences outside of the classroom. Click HERE for more thoughts from Brian Jungeberg, President of the Foundation, and Ryan Napier, co-founder of ‘Where I’m From,’ about their collaborative efforts.
SCS RECEIVES $1.2 MILLION LITERACY GRANT FROM OHIO DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) has awarded Strongsville City Schools $1.2 million in grant funds as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Grant. More than $33 million was awarded by ODE to 46 school districts and consortiums of districts to improve the language and literacy development of students.
Over the next three years, this grant money will provide Strongsville City Schools with three (3) Kindergarten - 5th Grade literacy coaches, as well as the Lexia Learning Program to provide research-based reading intervention support for each of the five (5) elementary schools in our District.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS “FOOD FIGHT” FOR THE STRONGSVILLE FOOD BANK
Strongsville’s five elementary schools recently competed in a “Food Fight” to benefit the Strongsville Food Bank. Students were encouraged to bring in non-perishable items during a week-long contest. With a combined total of 3,443 donated items, the students and their families raised over $10,500 for the Strongsville Food Bank. Surrarrer Elementary had an average of three donations per student and a total of 1,075 items, earning them this year’s “Food Fight” championship - but the real winners are the Strongsville Food Bank and the community members that benefit from their services.

SURRARRER 1ST GRADE STUDENTS BECOME RESTAURANT REVIEWERS
Surrarrer Elementary first grade students in Mrs. Misencik's class became restaurant reviewers for a recent opinion writing activity, which included taste testing and participation from several local restaurants. Students developed their own factors on which they rated various restaurants - including food/taste, available play areas, cleanliness, polite/nice workers, and wait time for food. Parent volunteers picked up food donations and helped serve in the classroom, as well as providing information to the students on the restaurant workers and wait time. After this in-class “taste test” students filled out reviews, providing at least two specific reasons for their rating, which were delivered to the restaurants. Special thanks to Chick-fil-A, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Gran Fiesta, and Dairy Queen for their participation!
