Norris News!
A weekly update from campus...
October 13, 2017
Conferences, student showcase and field trips, oh my! Another busy week of learning is in the books! As we are out and about visiting classrooms we are seeing so many examples of students collaborating with their peers, teachers challenging students to extend their thinking and active engagement throughout their daily learning! I am constantly reminded of how amazing our students and staff are each and every day.
A HUGE thank you to the PTA for providing ALL of our students a NORRIS grade level shirt to wear for our upcoming Fun Run and for Field Trips. Thank you! Thank you!
Enjoy your weekend!

Cooler Weather is Coming...
It started getting cooler in the mornings, and will only get colder as we get closer to the winter months. Because of this, the carpool line will get increasingly longer on cold mornings, so please plan accordingly. We are already seeing an increase in tardiness due to the longer carpool line. Don't forget that you can drop students off in the mornings starting at 7:10 am.
As a reminder, students should be in their class ready for the day when the bell rings at 7:45 am. Thank you for your cooperation.

Character Lab Update!
This week in character lab, we are still kicking off our Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.
Students in 3-5th grade will learn the definition of bullying, what a bystander is, what to do in the moment bullying is witnessed, what the difference between reporting and tattling is and how to report bullying. See flyer below.
Students in K-2nd will learn the difference between reporting vs. tattling, what to do if you don’t know the difference between reporting vs. tattling, how to identify a big vs. little problem, respecting others and their personal space, and how to report bullying and big problems. See flyer below.
The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is implemented throughout FISD. Please visit our FISD Guidance and Counseling site for a closer look at bullying prevention. http://www.friscoisd.org/departments/guidance-and-counseling/counseling-resources/bullying .
For more information about the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, visit this website http://www.violencepreventionworks.org/public/olweus_bullying_prevention_program.page.

Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon week is coming soon. Please join Norris Elementary in celebrating Red Ribbon Week October 23-27th! This is a national campaign to promote a healthy drug-free lifestyle! In order to make this week memorable for our students, each day will have themes chosen by our Student Council to reinforce our message of healthy choices and staying drug-free! Students will also be participating in guidance lessons promoting self-respect, and exploring how they choose to make healthy choices. Students will also bring home resources from the Texas Poison Center Network. For more information please visit: http://poisoncontrol.org/home/.
Red Ribbon Week Guidance:
Grades K-3 will understand why they need to “Ask First” before eating or drinking something they didn’t have permission to have as well as making healthy choices. Students will be read Sarah’s Sick day (K) http://www.counselingwithheart.com/sarahs-sick-day.htm
and Charlie and the Curious Club (1-3) http://www.counselingwithheart.com/charlie-and-the-curious-club-candy-or-medicine.html
Grades 4-5 will participate in our interactive scavenger hunt! Students will explore ways to say “No” to bad choices, identify reasons to be drug free and make healthy choices, and age appropriate facts to maintain a healthy lifestyle by avoiding drugs and alcohol.
- Parent Challenge: Start having conversations about what a drug is, the difference between good and bad drugs, and how making healthy choices impact our life. Start conversations with your child(ren) about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. When we present age appropriate information to our children, the door to communication can open. By approaching our kids, we let them know the information discussed is something we as parents can handle and they can come to us if ever faced with a tricky situation.

PTA News
Fun Run
Norris PTA Fun Run is coming up on October 27th. This is the PTA’s largest fundraiser of the year. Our school wide goal is that each student raise at least $50 for the Fun Run. Your child can do this by getting donations that you send back to school in the brown envelope that came home in your child’s Thursday folder last week, by sending in coins in the plastic bag that came home in yesterday’s Thursday folder, or by receiving donations online. Make sure to register online at: www.thegetmovincrew.com. Registering online and getting at least a donation of $25 gets your student a lanyard and 1 emoji.
The Fun Run Coin Drive is going through Thursday, October 19th. You should have received a baggie for coins in Thursday Folders.
Popcorn Friday
Our next Popcorn Friday is on October 20th and all popcorn money must be turned in by Wednesday, October 18th.
