ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION
Kindergarten Welcome Week Recommendation
Mary Wolverton, associate superintendent for elementary schools, provided the board with an update on the current kindergarten welcome week structure, and recommendations for the 2023-24 school year. The proposal aims to ensure students and families make a strong connection with the classroom teacher and school during individual meetings held during the first two days of the school year. Classrooms of students would then attend school on either Thursday or Friday, with 50% capacity attending on either day. The proposal will return for approval at a future meeting.
Middle School Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum Adoption
Becky Brodeur, associate superintendent for middle schools and student services; Dr. Nichole Rens, director of secondary curriculum, instruction and assessment; Julia Messenger, assistant director student services for mental health; Britt Olean, district school social worker; and Tom Hagerty, Anoka Middle School for the Arts principal, provided the board with an update on middle school Social Emotional Learning or SEL materials and a recommendation to purchase Character Strong curriculum to provide a consistent program at all district middle schools. The materials support the development of positive life skills for students including self-awareness, self-management, social management, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. Anoka-Hennepin has had a social-emotional learning curriculum component in place since the district moved from a junior high to middle school model in 1993. This recommendation would provide an evidenced based curriculum to all students, replacing school or individual classroom approaches to this subject area starting in the fall of 2023. The recommendation was approved on a 4-2 vote with Simon and Audette voting no.
