The Bulldog Brief
South Bend Jefferson Traditional Middle School
Dear Jefferson Learning Community,
May 21, 2023
Vol.1, No.21
Greetings and Happy Sunday!
This is the FINAL Bulldog Brief of the 2022-23 school year!
What a year it has been!
I have enjoyed getting to know all of your scholars during this inaugural year and getting to know the "Jefferson" way. Thank you for your patience with me as I navigated a new role. I love all of our Bulldogs and strive to create a team atmosphere that is student-focused. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your "village".
This week's Brief will be "brief" highlighting our upcoming events and reminding you of some important events. Thank you in advance for reading carefully!
We have 9 days to go!
A quick shout-out to our Bulldog softball and baseball teams for a great end to the year! You fought hard! Way to go Bulldogs! Both the boys and girls track teams made it to the city finals. Let's go out and cheer them on!
Also, a shout-out to Mrs.Rider-Schelle and the band and orchestra classes for two great performances this week. I really enjoyed the concerts. A job well done!
We have several events planned as we finish off the year. Please see the list of events below under "Upcoming." Also, the scholars will have another $3 dress-down day on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. Beginning next week, after Memorial Day, scholars are allowed to dress down each day - FOR FREE.
I am also adding a free BONUS dress-down day on Friday, May 26, 2023, as this is the day of the Summer Send-Off. Summer Send-Off takes the place of Field Day this year and is an afternoon filled with outdoor activities for our scholars. All scholars can bring in cash on Friday for various snacks and treats.
Finally, next week, on June 1, 2023, we look forward to seeing all 8th-grade families at the 8th-grade Recognition ceremony at Clay High School. Doors open at 9:50 am and the ceremony begins at 10:30 am. Students should report to school as usual - on the bus or by car. All scholars will travel together by bus to Clay. Following the ceremony, your scholar is released to celebrate with your family and begin their summer. See below for more details.
Thank you for your continued support for our school, our teachers, and our scholars. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out! Let's have an amazing week!

Summer is coming!
Sunny days and warm temperatures will soon be here. Check out some summer camps or other structured activities for your kids to participate in. There is a Police Athletic League that runs some South Bend camps that are absolutely free. Make sure that your students are playing outside and enjoying some family time. Teenagers tend to want to be alone or not hang around with family. Involve them in ideas of what they would like to do WITH the family. Help them create a healthy routine for bedtime so that it’s not so difficult in August when they return. Talk, talk, talk with your teen, and notice any changes. Most don’t think we are very smart at this age, but they are working to be less dependent. The summer is also a great time to teach them how to do the laundry and/or make a meal! Enjoy the summer family time and stay safe!
Love, Ms. Monica

New Clear Backpack Policy - Fall 2023
May 16, 2023
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The safety of our students remains our foremost priority. As we look ahead to the coming academic year, we wish to help further this commitment to your child’s safety by requiring clear backpacks for all students. Effective August 16, 2023, only clear backpacks will be permitted on our school campuses.
The district will provide one clear backpack to each student ahead of the coming academic year. Free backpacks will be also made available to all who attend the district’s annual “Back-to-School-Bash” at Brown Community Learning Center on August 12 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Additional opportunities for distribution will be communicated as the school year approaches.
Mesh backpacks are not acceptable, even if they are transparent. Students are allowed to carry within their backpacks a non-clear pouch no larger than 5.5” x 8.5” inches to hold personal items.
A list of frequently asked questions is available at sb.school.
We are thankful for your cooperation and are prepared to support our families as we keep our students and building safe.
Please know that more information will be forthcoming in the weeks and months to come.
Sincerely,
Eric Crittendon
