Fairview Falcon
Family Newsletter, January 2024
From the Principal
Dear families:
Welcome back! I sincerely hope that you enjoyed the holiday season with your friends and families. I know that our staff enjoyed the time away to rest and recharge, but all of them were ready and excited to welcome our students back to school on Wednesday.
As we embark on 2024, here are a few updates that I want you to be aware of:
- CPS will share Summer School information with you all very soon . I highly recommend Summer School for most students-- especially rising Kindergartners, rising 6th graders, or if a family has concerns about their child's academic performance. Dates: May 30 through June 26.
- At this time, I am being told that Summer School will be held here at FVE this June. I'm crossing my fingers that this does not change!
- Mini Courses are making their triumphant return to Fairview this Winter. See below for the official announcement, and be on the lookout for more information to be sent home on Friday, January 5th.
- All students will take the district's next iReady Reading and Math assessments in the month of January. We are excited to see how much growth our students will undoubtedly show. Our teachers will chart growth with each of their students and will inform families accordingly.
- How families can support: Please encourage your child to give their best effort on the test, take their time, and have a positive attitude!
Thank you, and Happy New Year!
Dr. Simmons, Principal

Yearbook Ads for Graduating 5th Graders
Dear 5th grade parents/guardians,
It is 5th grade yearbook ad time! Each year the Fairview PTA sells 5th grade “ads” for the yearbook. The ad includes a picture of your child and a brief message. Please email the below information to Katie Marienfeld at kmarienfeld@gmail.com by January 31st.
• A full JPEG resolution picture of your child
• A brief message
• Your choice of background color
• $6.00 made payable to Fairview PTA mailed to the school/dropped off at school if paying via check or cash (we cannot make change, exact amount please) or @Fairview-PTA if paying via Venmo.
We will not be able to determine the size of your ad until we know how many ads we receive, therefore, I cannot give you a word count/range. I would encourage you to keep your message brief. We have 4 pages in the yearbook designated for 5th grade ads. If you submit a horizontal (landscape) picture, your message block will be smaller and your picture blocker bigger. The opposite is true if you submit a vertical picture, your message block will be bigger and your picture block smaller. We have included some examples (see attachment for samples).
Please let me know if you have any questions. I will email you when I receive your ad information for confirmation that I’ve received it. Once completed, I’ll also send you a screenshot of how your ad looks to make sure you are pleased with it. (This also serves as a double check to make sure that no one gets missed who submitted an ad to us).
Thanks so much,
Katie Marienfeld

From the Gym
Hello Fairview Families!
I hope everyone had a Happy Holiday and enjoyed some time off. Back in action now!
With all grade levels we finished up our Tumbling Skills. At the end of the unit, we played a game called Sailors and Sea Creatures. Ask your kids about it!
We’ll now begin work on our basketball skills with 3-5 and basic ball skills with K-2.
Please join us on January 13th at CoMo Rocks for a fun fundraiser with proceeds going toward the rock wall. Come hang out anytime between 10am-1pm. Be on the lookout for more information.
Please check the A,B,C,D schedule and continue wearing tennis shoes.
Finally, if you’ve been in the gym lately you might have noticed the pictures on the bulletin boards. They are of our kiddos in action!! If you wish, send me a photo of your child doing something active and I’ll get it up on the board. You’re welcome to send in a hard copy pic or email me one and I’ll get it up!
Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
Mr. Wright
From the Art Room:
Happy New Year Fairview Families! In art class students will be finishing up our Portrait Unit the first few weeks of January and brining their works home, ask your child what they are working on. We will then begin our Sculpture Unit which is many students favorite because we will be working with CLAY!
This unit takes time, but all students will have a ceramic piece to bring home eventually. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.

From the Media Center
The Media Center was a busy place in December with lots of STEM activities! Kindergarten used a variety of materials to create temporary houses, boats or bridges for a Gingerbread Man. 1st grade created a map of a park and a robot called an Ozobot explored on their maps. 2nd grade built designs and coded sounds and actions using Lego WeDo 2.0 kits. 3rd grade used the giant 17’ X 25’ map of Missouri to practice map skills and using coordinates. 4th grade made a light up greeting card with a circuit. 5th grade used TinkerCad to design a keychain with their name that can be printed on our 3-d printer. Enjoy winter – it is perfect for snuggling in and reading. The public library is a great place to visit on days that are too cold to get outside to play – or any day!

Technology Specials
I hope you all had a very nice break. In technology we have begun to code. Grades 1st thru 5th are using Scratch Jr. at different levels appropriate for their age. They very much enjoy being creative with it and seeing how each command makes their program work, or what needs to be changed to make it work the way they want it to. Kindergarteners are starting with the very basics by using Kodable. They are very excited about that. Looking ahead we will be exploring Electronic Library more to see what resources are available to use for upcoming research projects. I’m looking forward to the fun projects planned for them.

From the Music Room
December always brings a ton of fun to the Music Room. We performed movement activities to The Nutcracker, and all grade levels had our singing and coloring day. This is a Fairview tradition where we spend our entire class time singing familiar holiday songs and coloring together. It is a strong community building activity, and our students look forward to it each year. We wrapped up December with music celebrations for following the Falcon Four. Starting in January, we will welcome Ms. Miranda Frankenbach to the music room as our student teacher. Ms. Frankenbach is a music education major from Mizzou. We look forward to welcoming her here at Fairview.

Winter Weather
As cooler weather approaches, please dress your child accordingly. During this time of the year it is hard to predict the weather, so dressing in layers is always a great idea. Our students go outdoors for recess unless the "feels like" temperature drops below 20 degrees.
