Computer Systems
How stuff works on a computer dictionary and what they are.
Introduction
How does a computer work ? Well lets find out ! In this leaflet we will find out what is inside a computer, such as :
- CPU
- Motherboard
- Hard drive
- Chip
Hard Drive
A disk drive used to read from and write to a hard disk.
It is a device used to permanently store and also retrieve information.
Motherboad
A printed circuit board containing the principal components of a computer or other device, with connectors for other circuit boards to be slotted into.
CPU
The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the part of a computer system that is commonly referred to as the "brains" of a computer. The CPU is also known as the processor or microprocessor. The CPU is responsible for executing a sequence of stored instructions called a program.

RAM
RAM (pronounced ram) is an acronym for random access memory, a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly; that is, any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes.
Computer Chip
Computer chip. Computer chip, also called chip, integrated circuit or small wafer of semiconductor material embedded with integrated circuitry. Chips comprise the processing and memory units of the modern digital computer.
Power suply
A power supply unit (PSU) converts mains AC to low-voltage regulated DC power for the internal components of a computer. Modern personal computers universally use a switched-mode power supply. Some power supplies have a manual selector for input voltage, while others automatically adapt to the supply voltage.

Colossus
Colossus was the name of a series of computer developed for British code breakers in 1943-1945 to help in the cryptanalysis of the Lorenz cipher.
Elliot 803
The Elliott 803 is a small, medium speed digital computer which was manufactured by the British company Elliott Brothers in the 1960s. About 250 were built and most British universities and colleges bought one.
Inegrated Circuits
An integrated circuit (IC), sometimes called a chip or microchip, is a semiconductor wafer on which thousands or millions of tiny resistors, capacitors, and transistors are fabricated. An IC can function as an amplifier, oscillator, timer, counter, computer memory, or microprocessor.
BBC Micro
The BBC Microcomputer System, was a series of microcomputers and associated peripherals designed and built by the Computer company for the BBC Computer Literacy Project, operated by the British Broadcasting Corporation. Designed with an emphasis on education, it was notable for its ruggedness, expandability and the quality of its operating system.
