Celebrate School Library Month With Us!
April is School Library Month. If you would like to hold a library card drive in your class, let me know. Michael Clark, our MyLibraryNYC liason, will be happy to process the cards, BUT, this must be done by May 4th. I can give you the applications for the students to complete. PLEASE email me ASAP if you would like your students to participate.
Fake News is a Real Problem!
With our students constantly checking their phones for the latest news, they need to distinguish between what's true and what's not. There are a host of lesson plans out there to help you teach about fake news. Try the Office of School Library Services comprehensive libguide on News Literacy for starters. "Teaching Strategies to Detect Fake News" by Teach Hub.com is another helpful resource directed towards teachers.
Poetry Rocks!
Examines the lives and poetry of leading contemporary American poets such as Elizabeth Bishop, Gwendolyn Brooks, Allen Ginsberg, Sylvia Plath, and Robert Lowell, covering their style, themes, and more, with examples of their work and short bibliographies.
Poems to Learn by Heart
A collection of over 100 poems on a wide variety of topics, from the silly to the serious. Beautifuly illustrated by Jon J. Muth.
To This Day by Shane Koyczan
There is always time to support our students who are bullied and ignored. This book is the illustrated version of Shane Koyczan's viral sensation anti-bullying poem, To This Day. Share it with your students and continue the stand up to bullying movement.
Congratulations to Sue Kendzierski: The New York Agriculture 2018 Teacher of the Year
Ms. Kendzierski takes her students on a journey from greenhouse to garden. She has made living environment become alive by germinating seeds, growing vegetables and collaborating with Ms. J. DiMarco, our Living Environment teacher and Ms. Frank Bayer, our librarian, to create engaging learning opportunities for our students. Read more about her award and the amazing work she is doing here.
Do you have an aspiring writer in your class? Students selected for the Youth Communication summer program will get one on one mentoring from a professional editor, write and revise stories, go on field trips and make new friends. Deadline is May 18, 2018.
