Kia ora koutou to our Vogeltown whanau and a warm welcome to our new families joining our school in 2020.

Last week we had two Teacher Only Days at school for the staff to 'set the tone' for the year, and I must say the start of this year has been a very positive and productive beginning to what will be another busy year!

This term is going to be another crazy term with many events happening. Make sure you watch the calendar in the newsletter - it is also available on the school app and on our website. We begin the term with our traditional 'Vogeltown Adventure' in week 3 followed by our 'Whanau Fun Fiesta' the week after that.

You will notice that the pool has had a 'spruce up' with new paint - a massive thanks to everyone involved. You will also notice at the junior side that 'part 2' of the scooter track has been completed. A big thanks to the New Plymouth District Council Lets Go team, the Vogeltown Home and School and Vogeltown Board of Trustees for fundraising and paying for this track - it will be well used!

Today we have 328 kids at Vogeltown, this is about the same number we started with in 2019. The difference being, we have a new classroom at the senior side that we can now use and this has enabled us to take some of the load off the middle (Y3/4) and senior (Y5/6) classes. These classes are sitting at about 22 - 26 kids which is much more conducive to quality teaching.

The kids and staff have made a great start to the school year, we look forward to having another cracker of a year!

We are pleased to continue with another year of 'stable' staffing at Vogeltown. We have Mr George as a 'Walking Deputy Principal' in 2020 again. Mr George will be helping with small targeted groups, releasing teachers, and helping Mr Ogle out. You will find Mr George's office in the senior school admin area.

We welcome Mrs Seed to the leadership team as she takes over the reigns of the Huatoki syndicate. We also welcome Mrs Dani Melody and Miss Elly Fleming to the team!

WELCOME - New VS students and whanau, Week 1 2020

A huge welcome to our new students and families to Vogeltown in 2020! We had a great powhiri for our new students on Monday and each new student (and 2 new teachers) got up in front of the school and wore the amazing korowai (korowai o manaaki - cloak of care).

Because we had 30 new students, we have not put all the photos in the newsletter - there is a link below to the photos of each new student wearing our wonderful korowai.

We know that all our new students and families will love their time at Vogeltown as they become part of our massive family! He mihi ki to tatou iwi hou - a welcome to our new people.

Every family should aim for 100% attendance for their son/daughter. As a school, we actively follow up on all non-attendance and make collect data of all our kids. We do this because we know that patterns of non-attendance can affect kids - their learning and their relationships.

Our school office will always contact families if we have not been made aware that a students is away. A reminder that you can let us know about attendance through our 'skool loop' app, our school cell 021753680, school phone 067536843 or email office@vogeltown.school.nz.

As you will be aware the situation is rapidly evolving internationally concerning the coronavirus. Children are currently returning to classrooms. The health of all people is a priority and we will always err on the side of caution. If you have a particular concern please contact Healthline at 0800 611 116. Further information is available at:

Novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) guidance – Ministry of Healt

Yesterday every child received a 'Communication update form'. These are very important for the school. They provide you with the 'ways' we communicate with you at home and they also provide us with updates if you have had a change in contact details.

Please fill this form in and return it to your child's classroom teacher if you had a change in address, contact numbers, email address or any other contact details you think we need to know. Thanks heaps!

We are very lucky to have a school pool at Vogeltown. We are also very lucky to have an awesome staff who came in during the break to paint it up - it looks awesome!

As part of our PE and Health curriculum, we expect the kids to swim everyday. The new swimming curriculum encourages water safety, water exploration and water confidence at this age, so we do not expect kids to be doing lengths of freestyle and butterfly.

Please make sure your child(ren) have their togs ready to go each day, with the weather the way it is currently, we will be making the most of the pool.

If you want to use the pool after school hours, please see the senior office for a key. All keys are $45 ($5 back one key returned at the end of the season). You will be required to sign an agreement with the school - please read the terms and conditions carefully.

A reminder that any medication that the school office has to hold, or have on site, must be handed in to the junior or senior office. There is also a 'medication form' that all parents/caregivers will need to fill in when the medication is delivered.

Lucky book club forms have already come out this week. A reminder these are due back before Friday 14th February to the school junior or senior offices.

Here is some information about this year's Weetbix TRYathlon. It usually sells out early so make sure you register ASAP if your child wants to take part!
