WHAT'S HAPPENING IN 6TH GRADE
The 6th graders joining me in 6A have been adapting to the new junior high schedule very well. They've met and made many new friends in such a short period. It is awesome to be able to see their happy smiles while they interact during the new locker break and switching classes with me (Religion, Literature & Science), Mrs. Gafner (Math), Mr. Mertzman (English), Mrs. Hannah (Writing), Ms. Garner (Social Studies), Mr. Wells (PE), Mrs. Wells (Library), and Mrs. Kulwin (Art). This year, we will be exploring some very interesting topics as each student strengthens their skills as a Lifelong Learner! There are also a lot of exciting things to look forward to this school year, including; new friends to make, meeting our Peace Pals, new skills to master, new books to read, Campus Ministry, projects to create, and of course the long-awaited field trip: Science Camp! They can’t wait to get started on all of these! ~Mrs. Escobar

Grades 6 - 8:
All conferences are in-person meetings in your child's subject classroom.
It is not mandatory to attend a Middle School (Gr.6-8) parent-teacher conference unless specifically requested by their teacher. Conferences begin at 1:30 PM each day. From 12:50 to 1:10 PM and 1:10 to 1:30 PM appointments are designated for joint-conferences, wherein you can request, or we may require, a conference with all teachers at the same time. If you desire a joint-conference, please email your homeroom teacher to arrange a time.
If a conference is not specifically requested, you still have the opportunity to meet with any teacher to address any questions or concerns that you might have regarding your child's progress. Simply choose a conference day and time. Please be sure to add your student's name to the comment section. Your child needs to attend your scheduled conference.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
I am strong.
I am capable.
I am LOVED.
I am intelligent.
I am _______________. (Your turn)
How often do you practice speaking positively with your children? How often do you practice speaking positively to yourself? There is SO much power in the language we use and it is the easiest way to help your students reframe their internal dialogue.
Science has shown speaking positively about ourselves aloud can actually change our brains and even improve the way we see our future unfolding.
As a parent and proponent of daily affirmations, writer Amy Miller describes the “magic formula” for creating one. To be effective, an affirmation requires three key elements:
- Language - Begin each phrase with strong, positive words. (Examples: “I am kind. “I am going to rock this day.” “I create happiness for myself”)
- Visualization - Spend several moments picturing details of the emotion or situation you’re affirming. This step connects your words to the positive feelings surrounding them.
- Implementation - Believe in your statement. If the affirmation feels false, know the more you practice, the more real it becomes.
Affirmations provide the foundation for your students to develop a Growth Mindset and they can be implemented while brushing teeth, combing hair, packing lunches, or driving to campus. Just a few minutes a day of positive self-talk can reset a mind and change the way your child shows up to their day. And just a quick reminder for you parents, this can reset your mind as well.
3-5 minutes a day
3-5 positive affirmations
UNLIMITED possibilities for greatness.
Small tweaks lead to big changes. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
Blessings!

PERSONAL APPEARANCE, DRESS CODE, FREE DRESS REMINDERS
Students should have a sense that they are going to “School” for a specific reason. At St. Viator, we have six goals for our dress code. (1) To create an atmosphere conducive to learning; (2) to promote student safety; (3) to be in good taste and ensure modesty; (4) to project a good image of the school; (5) to be easily observable and enforceable, and (6) to allow for comfort and a feeling of “equality” for all.
All students are to arrive at St. Viator Parish School properly attired. The Administration has final say with regard to appropriate interpretation of the dress code. Therefore, parents must present any special requests in writing to the Administration for consideration of an exception to the dress code. If the student is not in compliance with the dress code the parents may be called to come pick up their child from school.
Alternate Dress Code/Free Dress: The above uniform alternate dress applies to First Communion, grade 8 Graduation, and other school events. There are no “Free Dress” on days the dress uniform is mandatory including Mass days.
All students must wear school appropriate shoes on free dress days. Girls may wear dresses, skirts, or shorts no more than 2 inches above the knee, jeans or pants with appropriate tops. Boys may wear jeans, pants, or shorts no more than 2 inches above the knee with appropriate tops—see below.
Not Permitted: hats, halter tops, strapless/spaghetti strap tops and or dresses, tank tops, midriff tops, pajamas, leggings, flip flops, slippers, sandals, high heels or backless shoes. Clothing with profanity, inappropriate pictures or symbols, extremely baggy, torn, or too tight clothing is not to be worn.
Please refer to pages 41-44 in the Parent/Student Handbook for complete guidelines.
5th Grade Campus Ministry in conjunction with Community Outreach (formerly Homeless Lunch) is coming up on Tuesday, October 11, 2022.

Please help make our Sunshine Kits complete by bringing GRANOLA BARS.

The home and school must work together to safeguard the health and welfare of the child and prevent the exposure and spread of childhood illnesses. A parent should keep a child home when any symptoms of a contagious disease are apparent.
Please refer to pages 38-40 in the Parent/Student Handbook for complete Health/Safety Issues guideline.
Viator Parish Tuition Rate Reminder
The most significant criteria to qualify for the Viator Parish rate is regular attendance at Sunday Mass using your envelopes.
In order to qualify for the Viator rate you MUST:
- Attend a minimum of 26 masses (Saturday or Sunday)
- Use the envelopes sent to you from the church
- Forgot your envelope? Remember your parish number and use a blank envelope provided at mass.
DO NOT
- Mail in your envelopes to St. Viator church. These will not be counted.
- Drop off your envelope in the church on a school mass day.
- Forget the envelope and tell the church or school you went.
Tuition review will happen in November and you should have 13 masses by this time. All rates will be reviewed and possibly adjusted after the assessment. If your rate is adjusted it will be reflected on the December statement. Please DO NOT call or email the school office or church office to ask if changes are being made until after the receipt of your statement.
Remember, parents are a model of faith for their children and when families join us on a regular basis they are showing their children the priority faith and church has in their lives.
