Women's Suffrage
100 YEARS: Organization celebrates NY women's suffrage
A century ago, women in New York state neared a life-changing goal: the right to vote.
A local organization is celebrating the anniversary of that change — a proposition was approved on the Nov. 6, 1917 ballot — with a yearlong schedule of events, seminars, galleries, museum displays and parades.
The Broome-Tioga Suffrage Anniversary Committee, co-chaired by state Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo and Tioga County Legislative Chairwoman Marte Sauerbrey, is a group of local historians, educators and local women's organizations.
A re-enactment of the 1913 Convention of New York State Woman Suffrage Association parade that took place in Binghamton is also planned for this year.

New York State: The Women’s Road to Equality
In celebration of the Centennial anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York State, join us for this resource-rich teacher workshop. Participants will review standards-aligned tools and content focusing on women’s struggles for rights and freedom in New York State. Key focus areas include: Rights denied to women, social roles & lifestyles of women, and notable women from Broome & Tioga Counties.
Activities will include exploring primary documents & artifacts, online libraries, and creating make & take projects. All participants will leave with thumb drives containing resources from the workshop. This workshop is most appropriate for grade levels 2 through 8. However, any educator with an interest is welcome to register.
The same workshop will be offered on the following dates at Roberson Museum & Sciencenter. Please register for one:

Nature's Best at Roberson
Be awed, inspired and informed by our newest exhibit featuring award winning images from Nature's Best Photography. Students will gain an appreciation for the beauty and diversity of nature through the art of photography, acknowledge the efforts of photographers worldwide and further their understanding of conservation awareness. Select competition winners' photographs are exhibited annually at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. Visit Roberson Museum and Science Center's website for more information, including how to schedule for your class trip. https://www.roberson.org/education/
Freshman Research Immersion Program at BU
The Freshman Research Immersion (FRI) program at Binghamton University is offering a one-day workshop in summer 2017 for high school students and teachers in the Southern Tier area. The workshop will focus on the study of watersheds and wetlands in this region. Specifically it will include a trip to our Nature Preserve to learn about the natural history of wetlands, as well as hands-on research activities in both the field and laboratory in the Fuller Hollow Creek Watershed. Featured in the workshop is the kind of research that our freshmen do in areas of Biogeochemistry and Geospatial Remote Sensing. We will also provide instructional resources for teachers that we have tested and that they can use in their classes.
The goal of the workshop is to enhance the professional development of both students and teachers. Students will establish connections with BU faculty and students, experience personal and professional growth through engaging in the scientific process of discovery, and learn of the various career opportunities in STEM disciplines currently in high demand (e.g., environmental protection, surveying/mapping, and planning for sustainability). During our workshop, we will provide breakfast, lunch, and snack breaks, as well as materials necessary for completing workshop activities.
Furthermore, we want to develop long-term partnerships with high school science educators interested in introducing their students to biogeochemistry and/or geospatial remote sensing. We have funding from the National Science Foundation that will allow us to accommodate 8 high school educators and 8 high school students each summer for the next three years, for a total of 24 teachers and 24 students. The high school educators will be compensated for their participation in the form of a stipend ($30/hour for one 8-hour day) to attend the workshop.
This summer workshop is sponsored by Binghamton University’s FRI and Summer Research Immersion (SRI) programs. FRI is a three-semester research experience that begins in the fall freshman semester; SRI is the parallel program for sophomores and juniors that runs for 10 weeks in the summer. Both programs provide a stepped introduction of how to conduct research to address important problems. They are conducted with a multi-mentored supportive environment in state-of-the-art laboratories. And these programs emphasize students’ professionalization (i.e. development of workplace communication, teamwork, project management, and technical skills).
We are currently recruiting teachers in the Southern Tier area to participate in our workshop. Would you be able to distribute the attached flier to teachers within your network? If you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me by phone (607-777-6793) or email (gmeindl@binghamton.edu).

DASA Training
The New York State Education Department (NYSED) Dignity for All Students Act requires that all students applying for certification after Dec. 31, 2013, complete six hours of training regarding the social patterns of harassment, bullying and discrimination. Binghamton's DASA training will consist of six hours of face-to face instruction.
Under DASA, this training is required so professionals meet the Commissioner's Regulations for anyone applying for an administrative or supervisory service, classroom teaching service or school service certificate or license on or after Jan. 1, 2014. Successful completion of this course will meet the certification requirements in §14(5) of Chapter 102 of the Laws of 2012. More information about the Dignity for All Students Legislation may be found at: http://www.p12.nysed.gov/dignityact/.
DASA Training will take place on a regular basis over the course of the year. The cost is $65 (cash, check, or money order are acceptable forms of payment).
