October 28th and October 29th
3rd - 6th Grade Girls Basketball Camp
YOUR 8th grade girls basketball team opened their season with a bang on Thurs. Nov. 5 against a small, but plucky squad from Boone. In the first game, YOUR Bluejays jumped ahead with some quick buckets and never looked back. Hustle was the name of the game, with pressure defense from the Bluejays netting several steals. Though some extremely acrobatic passing and catching resulted in turnovers, sharp shooting and some solid rebounding kept the lead. The Bluejays were led by Lydia Martin with 16 points, to a final of 34 - 29.
The second game proved an excellent experience for YOUR Bluejay team. They learned a great deal about running their offense, and the importance of communication on the defensive end. YOUR Bluejays brought their best attitude and effort, but fell short to the accurate shooting Toreadors. Kiersten George provided the Bluejay points, with a final of 2 - 12.
YOUR Bluejays will be in action again on Monday, Nov. 9 on the BF Middle School court against the Gilbert Tigers. Tipoff is 4:15. Come cheer them on!
The Tigers of Gilbert rolled into Bondu last night to take on YOUR 8th grade girls basketball team in what turned out to be an epic contest. With some sharp shooting, Gilbert pulled ahead early - but YOUR Bluejay team battled back. Tenacious one-on-one defense from Bluejays like Claire Meislahn and Bre Millikan, and others sought to keep the game close, but the quick Tigers kept dropping their shots. Final: 25 - 43.
In the second game, YOUR Bluejays showed improvement over their last contest, with better defense and rebounding. Running their offense remained a challenge, but there were some very nice shots, including a brilliant post move by Kinsey Cameron. But in the end, the Tigers prevailed, 18-42.
YOUR Lady Jays are back in action on Thurs. at Winterset. Wish them luck!
What is Power Hour?
Power Hour is an opportunity for students to receive support on assignments after school until 4:15 p.m. There are two teachers who work with students to provide instruction as needed. It’s also a quiet environment where students can maintain their focus without various distractions that might come with being off-site. Please contact the office if you want your child to stay for Power Hour on Tuesday or Wednesday each week, depending on which day they are in school.
Transportation is provided for students who need a bus ride home. The school needs to know by 12:30 p.m. if that is the case. Teachers may also recommend a student stay for Power Hour. In that case, they will email the parent/guardian and the student will also contact home stating they are to be at Power Hour.
Winter Activities
This email is being sent to all 7th-8th grade students and parents/guardians as a reminder that students (who want to participate) need to be registered for Winter, Spring, and/or Summer activities in our activities registration site (if you have not already done so). Parent(s)/guardian(s): those of you who also have high school students may have received this message yesterday. You can register (or check to confirm registration) here ( Students - your parent/guardian will need to complete the registration for you):
If you have forgotten your username/password, we can help, so please email or call us. Do not create a second account, the site does not allow more than one account per student so you will get an error message if you do. You may sign up for all seasons now, or just winter; and spring/summer later.
Also, all students who wish to participate must have a recent (within the last 12 months) pre-participation athletic physical on file. If you have already turned in a new form this school year, re-submission is not necessary. ( Note - the registration site goes by the date of the last physical you may have uploaded there - if you have turned in a new one directly to us since that time, the site may tell you the physical is outdated. Contact me if you are not sure of renewal date). I've attached the most recent version, but this link will also take you to the form:
Pre-Participation Athletic Physical Form
Prior to submission of the physical form, please make sure you complete all of page 1, and sign the bottom of page 2 beneath the physician's signature.
Due to Covid and the Governor's proclamation, students who had their last physical done on or after July 1, 2019 have been extended a grace period and those physicals are valid through December 31, 2020. Winter sports will most likely run through January or later, so if your child signs up for a winter sport/activity, a new physical could be required to get them through the season if they fall into this grace period. Feel free to email/call us if you need verification of physical date(s), or if you have further questions. You may send the physical to the middle/high school office with your student(s), or email them to us, or upload them to the activities registration site. (PDF format is preferred).

Hybrid Schedule
We recognize there are challenges that accompany student learning on the days they are not in school. The flexibility families have shown is appreciated and we are all working together to support each other as we learn how to navigate the early part of the school year.
All virtual learning assignments are posted by 8:00 a.m. The teachers are clearly labeling what is expected of the students and when the assignments are due. Many of the lessons include videos which do a great job of answering questions. Please contact individual teachers with any clarification you might need beyond the posted directions and videos.
The middle school is expecting students to spend approximately 20 minutes on each core content class the days they are off-site. It equates to around two hours on the student’s virtual days. The district HUB has a weekly schedule and other activities in the event want more for your student to engage with.
Google Classroom has a new ‘To Do’ feature that organizes assignments for students and they can show you what they are expected to complete. Looking at Infinite Campus is the best way to see accurate grades. Thank you for all you are doing to support student engagement in school.
WE CARE
Hello Bluejay Families! We are so happy to see your children back at school; we have all missed them! I wanted to send a couple of quick reminders to help keep things moving smoothly at school.
1). Please check in with your child every morning before they come to school. If they have symptoms (i.e. headache, nasal congestion (stuffy/runny nose), nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, fever (100.0F), muscle/body aches, fatigue, sore throat, etc), PLEASE keep them home and consider taking them for a medical evaluation. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has identified the above as "low risk" symptoms, potentially being associated with COVID-19. If they report two of these symptoms at school, they will be sent home and will be required to have a medical provider evaluation or remain in isolation at home for 10 days, as if they have tested positive for COVID. If they have one "high risk" symptom (i.e. new cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, loss of taste/smell), they will be sent home. If your child has a known pre-existing condition that we have documentation of (allergies, asthma, etc), that will be considered as a factor in determining whether they will be sent home.
2) If your student is sent home with potential COVID-19 symptoms, the IDPH guidance says they should have a medical provider evaluation (in person or telemedicine) that can provide an alternate diagnosis (i.e. allergies, common cold, gastritis, etc) OR remain home for 10 days as if they have tested positive. A negative COVID test alone is not sufficient to return to school. They must also have a significant improvement or resolution of symptoms for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication for fever), before they can return, even with a doctor's note. Once evaluated, please send us the note with the alternate diagnosis. They cannot return to school without this documentation.
3) The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has provided these guidelines to assist with the safe reopening of schools. We are following their guidance, as well as that provided by the CDC. We realize these guidelines require additional work on your end to ensure that your student is healthy when attending school, but please know that the purpose is to ensure that ALL of our students and staff stay as healthy as possible. We want to be able to continue in-person learning, so we must all do our part.

4). Please send your student with a mask, shield or face covering and water bottle every day. Our drinking fountains are only allowing bottles to be filled so your child will get very thirsty if they do not have a water bottle with them. Please also remind your student to bring their mask home frequently to be washed.
5). If you are unsure about whether you should keep your child home from school due to illness, you probably should. Contact their pediatrician/medical provider for guidance if needed.
6.) If your child is ill and you need to let the school know please email myself, Ms. Jen and their teacher.
Thank you for your assistance in keeping our school as healthy as possible!

Eligibility Policy Update
Due to the hybrid calendar and learning a new routine, we have decided as a building to push the enforcement of our eligibility policy back to Friday, September 25th. On that Friday, a grade report will be tabulated and any student who isn’t passing all their classes will be ineligible to participate in one competition beginning the week on September 28th. They will also attend Power Hour on Tuesday and Wednesday of that week before going to practice/watching the game. The full eligibility policy is located in our student handbook.
Please contact the middle school with questions you might have.
