History of Basketball
How has basketball changed since the 19th century?
The invention of basketball.
The game basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield Massachusetts. The game originally came from a game that he played in his childhood called "duck-on-a-rock". The game was invented because the Springfield college needed a game for the winter, and no one would create a game that could be played indoors for the winter when Dr. Luther Gulick asked the class.
Changes in the game
James Naismith stopped using peach baskets as goals and started using metal rims with nets. By 1906 they would cut holes in the net so the ball could go through the net. Later he asked A.G. Spalding & Bros. to create and design a new ball for the game. In 1942 factory produced basketballs were made and became more consistent. Since the invention of basketball, the game has not changed much."The rules have been tinkered with, but by-and-large, the game of "basketball" has not changed drastically since Naismith's original list of the "thirteen rules" was tacked up on a bulletin board at Springfield College"
Early Games
The first games were played at Springfield Massachusetts with nine people on a team and a soccer ball. In 1896 the first college basketball game was played with the University of Iowa and the University of Chicago."Since its invention in the late 19th century, basketball has grown from a recreational sport played at YMCA's to an internationally popular professional sport."
