Big picture

Mock ACT on January 15th

On Tuesday, January 15th all juniors will take a mock ACT using the math/science wing of the school. Watch for an email from Mischa Brainard for a schedule of teachers who will be testing, are displaced, and/or need to cover a testing teacher's class.

Mental Health-Required Training

Mental Health First Aid training will be held on iLearnPulaski days. This training is required for all staff and held from 8:30 - 3:00 at Southern Middle School in the library. An email about this was sent from Ms. Ellis with an attachment listing faculty/staff that have been trained. If your name was not on that list, you need to register for training. Email Lori Price to get your spot reserved and list which iLearn day for which you wish to register.

Reading is a skill, and just like any other skill, it requires practice. Most students get very little practice reading. Some literacy strategies you can establish in your classroom:

  • Direct vocabulary instruction
  • Classroom discussion of vocabulary words
  • Sustained Silent Reading
  • Require reading directly related to content
  • Provide reading materials in the classroom
  • Teach strategies to determine word meaning through context
  • Promote a culture of reading in our building

Literacy across all contents is part of a basic foundation for a great education. Encourage your students to check out a book to take home and read over Christmas break, or better yet, schedule a time with Charity Edwards to take your students to the library before we are out.

Success With Higher Standards

Southwestern High School will strive to graduate every student college/career ready and prepared for the 21st century.
