The Pony Express
Fun in First Grade
Learning with Mrs. Ackenbom's Littles
Math in 2017!
Manipulatives and teamwork make math a blast!
Diveristy in 2017
We learned about how some children celebrate Christmas in different countries.
We discussed that people may need different things to be successful. Some children want to learn to think before doing while others want to not worry as much!
Rudolph is a great lesson on diversity and being kind and respectful to others even if they are different from us. Our cinnamon reindeer have special powers that make them extraordinary and we loved writing our stories about them! Tom's reindeer is even able to do magic like Harry Potter!
Literacy in 2017!
We write our word study and nonsense words in shaving cream...a class favorite activity!
We have choice and comfort when we "read to self."
Here Zeb and Tom are leading the class in reciting our weekly poem and Max rereading a favorite book. Rereading text is a great way to gain confidence and comfort in literacy!
Sorting pictures with text helps us organize written information.
Here we are reading our Studies Weekly discussing how to problem solve when we have a problem with another person. We came up with many strategies to work with others including rock, paper, scissors to come to an agreement or simply walking away when you need a break.
Lucy the Reading Dog and other Volunteers!
Collaboration is the name of the game in the new year. We will focus on learning and teaching by interacting with other students and animals. We will begin a Reader's Theatre unit in which students, no matter where they are in their learning journey, will practice and present plays to fellow peers. We will also continue book buddies with Mrs. Albertson's fourth grade class and continue reading with our dog, Lucy. You can also see pictures of our kiddos reading with our Western Helper, Ms. Anna. She will come twice a week to read with kids and to learn what it's like to be an elementary school teacher. Please let me know if you're interested in coming to our classroom to volunteer - the more the merrier! What a fun way to accomplish our goals in 2017!
Mokie Mondays
We will continue our Mokie Mondays and learning about the world around us with our connection with Camp Friendship. Mrs. Ackenbom's Littles certainly love Mokie and her best friend Buddy! We will have our next Mokie Monday next week on another day other than Monday because of our snow day. :D We will have hands-on-learning focusing on what Mokie and other animals do in order to survive harsh winter conditions.
We are Excited about Snow this Winter!
Here we are walking out in the first flurries of the season all bundled up as unique reindeer! We learned you can't judge a book...or a reindeer...by its cover!
