Hispanic Heritage Month - 9/15 to 10/15
I grew up in Colombia, Panamá and Costa Rica. As a child, it was easy to answer Colombian, when asked about my nationality. It was not until we moved to the United States of America, that I was faced with the need to complete forms with race and ethnicity questions. I found completing those forms troublesome, since they asked me to identify with only one race and I am biracial. In addition, none of the ethnicities listed on the forms described the way I identify myself. Over the years, I have learned how complex race and ethnicity identification can be, and yet, how simple it is to find commonalities between all races and ethnicities. As a Hispanic/Latina, I am thankful to my Yugoslavian mom, who embraced the Latin culture and learned to cook Latin dishes like arepas, cachapas, pupusas, Colombian/Venezuelan/Mexican tamales, bollos, patacones, maduros, yuca frita, buñuelos, tequeños, arroz con coco, etc. I thank my mom for enriching my live by teaching me to always try new experiences, foods, etc. before determining if I like them or not.
