Message from the Health Office
All of us at TES wish you a happy and healthy New Year! We have a few reminders from the Health Office as we begin 2020.
Parents of 3rd & 4th Grade Students: Please continue to send in your child’s physical examinations and immunization records as you receive them this year. All children entering the 4th grade must show proof of a physical exam.
Wellness screenings: Our 5th, 4th, 3rd, & kindergarten vision and hearing screenings are complete. If your child received a referral for vision and hearing, kindly make sure your child is seen by a provider in a timely manner and return the referral to the Health Office as soon as possible. Postural screenings for 5th grade students will be starting in March and will continue until completed. If your child is under the care of a physician for scoliosis, please contact the Health Office with an update. Postural screening referrals will be sent home if follow up care is recommended. Please periodically check your child’s backpack for a letter from the Health Office.
REMINDERS:
Illnesses: As per school policy, if your child has been sick, (vomiting, fever over 100, communicable illness such as strep) they must stay home from school. Students need to be fever free without the use of acetaminophen or ibuprofen, no vomiting, and no diarrhea for 24 hours before they are able to return to school. For illnesses requiring antibiotics such as strep throat, students need to be on antibiotic therapy AND fever free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. For common viruses/coughs and colds it is not usually appropriate to keep children out of school for the duration of symptoms, however the student’s cough should be manageable and your child should be eating and drinking adequately.
We have been seeing an increase in student illnesses since school resumed after winter break. Frequent hand washing at home and in school is a must to limit illness transmission! Please adhere to the school illness policy if your child is sick.
We would appreciate being notified if your child has been to the doctor’s office and confirmed with any communicable illness. It is our priority to keep all students safe and healthy to maximize every child’s time in the classroom.
It is not too late to get a flu vaccination if your child has not received it yet. Contact your primary care physician or the Health Office for more information.
CLOTHING:
All students should be dressed appropriately for the weather daily. Coat, hat, and gloves should be worn and provided by parent/guardian.
Please be sure your child has an extra set of clothes in their locker! If your child does not have a change of clothing you will be called to bring your child a change of clothes.
MEDICATION POLICY:
A written order from a physician is required to administer both prescription AND over the counter medication in the school setting (this includes cough drops). The nurse can administer short-term prescription medications such as antibiotics without a written physician’s order, as long as the original prescription container is provided and written parental consent is obtained.
Refillable water bottles are strongly encouraged to keep the children hydrated throughout the day. In addition to keeping the children properly hydrated, water helps to soothe sore throats and quiets coughs. Please send your child to school with a refillable water bottle daily to keep on their desks.
Please contact the Health Office at 978-649-1990 ext. 4 with any questions or concerns.
