News From Nighthawk Nation
Elevating Excellence in Academics, Character & Community
Edition 17 - Week of 1/20/2020
Leadership Corner
Mary Baker - K-3 Principal
This week we have had the great opportunity to celebrate awesome students at New Vision Charter School. This week we awarded 12 students with Golden Feather Awards. They were given for showing sacrifice and thoughtfulness to others, showing leadership in the classroom and lunchroom, following the expectations when others were not, being a friend and getting someone off the buddy bench, picking up the classroom and trash on the playground to keep NVCS looking excellent. Nothing makes my principal heart happier then when our students demonstrate the Nighthawk Way.
The third grade students had the opportunity this week to taste a Viking Breakfast. It was a delicious treat of bread and goat cheese, hard boiled eggs, and porridge. Thank you to our awesome 3rd grade team for making learning come alive. This is only one of the reasons NVCS is such an awesome place to learn and grow.
2nd Graders used Martin's Big Words in Storybook Stem this week to create word towers to show kindness.
Congratulations to our 3rd Grade Battle of the Books competitors for a huge win this week. We are so proud of you!
Coffee with the Principal:
Bring your cup of coffee or tea and join me for Coffee with Principal on Wednesday, January 22 at 8:00 in the art room. Looking forward to spending time with to help NVCS be the best that it can be.

Officer Dee Jalali
New Vision Parents,
“This is just a reminder that the school will be hosting a 1 hour presentation on CRASE (Civilian response to active shooter events) for parents on Wednesday January 22nd from 4-5 pm. This will be taught by Mountain View SRO Officer Salazar and co-taught by New Vision SRO, Officer Jalali.
We look forward to seeing you!
Additionally, please see the attached description regarding what CRASE:
Unfortunately, society is plagued with those whose only means of resolution is through violence. ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training), partnered with Texas State University, created a variety of programs to assist law enforcement from educating citizens to actively addressing those individuals wanting to kill innocence.
As an Active Assailant Instructor, it is imperative to provide as much information to the citizens to ensure the a favorable outcome from a horrific act. Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) was created to make this happen. The goals of the program are to provide strategies, guidance and proven methodologies if you are victim to such an event. These three simple words, "avoid, deny, defend," which coincides with the Department of Homeland Security's "run, hide, fight," are provided and explained to assist in the decision making during these events. The goal of this class is to challenge individuals and make them think of "what if?" and "what will I do?"

Slammin' Famine
New Vision Charter School Gears Up for Slammin’ Famine 2020
As the new decade begins, New Vision Charter School will kick things off with a program to inspire students to change the world, and they are thinking big.
Slammin’ Famine February 21-23, is a food packing event at The Ranch in Loveland which brings in 2,400 volunteers to pack over 600,000 meals for starving children all around the world.
New Vision’s participation in this event is a school-wide effort combining a dance, Social Studies activism curriculum, entrepreneurship, and group collaboration to raise the funds required to participate in the Slammin’ Famine event. This curriculum goes beyond classroom research. Student group leaders must guide their teams into writing and presenting a fundraising business plan, plus swim out of a “Shark Tank” competition in order to receive seed money to fundraise for Slammin’ Famine. This year, Otter Cares (a division of Otterbox) is supporting New Vision’s philanthropic endeavors, matching up Otter employees as coaches for group leaders, to bolster their presentations so they can make it out of the Shark Tank. The judging panel is comprised of professionals from Slammin’ Famine’s board, Bongo IT, HELP School Uganda, One Sight, and Otterbox. Shark Tank survivors will activate their fundraising plans at the New Vision Middle School Valentine’s Day Charity Ball, Friday February 14, all proceeds going to purchase food needed to bring Slammin Famine to Northern Colorado.
The Nighthawks will kick off Slammin’ Famine with a rally this Thursday, January 9, featuring 5 speakers ranging from a 7th grade student who worked with orphans in Ethiopia, to Otterbox Director of Sales and Business Development Luis Gonzalez, sharing how to use your creativity to innovate for a cause. Wrapping up is Jeff Borchert from the CDC, sharing about his work on the bubonic plague in Africa and how he and his son Osobie raised funds for playground equipment for kids in Uganda.
There is no better way to show love this Valentine’s Day in a way to directly impact world hunger than this hands-on, dynamic event. New Vision will send 120 students, parents, and staff to The Ranch to pack meals, plus join with other schools, local businesses, and other volunteers to change the statistics for the 6,000 children who die everyday from starvation. Watch the Nighthawks spend themselves to serve others. For more information:
