News from the Midwest Distrct of the Missionary Church

Spring Reminder

After what seemed to be an unusually long and dreary winter, spring (or summer as the case may be) has finally arrived. Seeing the trees produce new leaves, yards and fields turn from brown to green, and brightly colored flowers spring up everywhere, it is easy to praise God for His power and goodness. However, while the psalmist declared in Psalm 147 "How good it is to sing praises to our God..." he also went on to say that God delights, not so much in the splendors of His creation, but in "those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love." May we be people who cause God to delight!

2018 Midwest District Conference

The 2018 District Conference was held at Timber Lakes on April 23 and 24. The 24 hours spent together proved to be extremely beneficial and tremendously encouraging!

District Conference Journals

Digital copies of the Midwest District Conference Journal are now available. They include the 2017 annual reports, minutes of the 2018 District Conference, a compilation of the churches' statistical reports, and the district by-laws and policy manual. To request a copy, notify Dave Miller at nemcpastor@windstream.net

Women's Retreat

On April 13 & 14 ladies from across the district joined at Timber Lakes for a time of spiritual refreshment and challenge. Along with the times of fellowship, which built and strengthened personal relationships, the retreat encouraged deepening relationships with God through times of worship, led by Bethann Tillman, Shanna Johnston, and Erin Schmidt; the morning devotional time led by Deb Mleynek; and through the sharing of Darlene Psota (pictured above are some of the women who attended this year's retreat).

Church Spotlight: Hillside Missionary Church in Clarinda, IA

Hillside Missionary Church has been ministering to the people in Clarinda, IA since 1959. The current pastor is Brian Bontrager who began his ministry in Clarinda as the HMC youth pastor (serving on two separate occasions), and who became the senior pastor in 2006. Over the years the church has had an active youth program (The Light) and an Awana program that is held in cooperation with the First Baptist Church in Clarinda.

Pastor Brian Bontrager states, "We give glory to Jesus because the Spirit of God is at work in and through the ministry of the body of Christ at Hillside. Many of our people are serving in the church's various ministries. We regularly see that as people come to know the Lord more deeply, the more they love Him and the more they serve Him. He inspires and empowers people to serve and encourage other believers in the Church and to share the Lord Jesus with unbelievers. We continue to see a growing divide between the Church and the community as society becomes more hostile to God and the truth but we press on, striving to follow the admonition in 2 Corinthians 6:3: '...giving no cause for offense in anything, so that the ministry will not be discredited.' Even though there are good things happening, we, along with the rest of the Church in America, desperately need an outpouring of the Holy Spirit that we might walk more abandoned to Jesus and His cause."

On May 6th, the church held a special event that celebrated the 30th anniversary of the dedication of their current church building. Former pastor, Dave Miller, returned to Clarinda to bring the message that morning. There were many former attendees who also returned for the celebration (see pictures below).
