Weekly Update

Week of January 10, 2022

Hello Families,

Let me begin by saying thank you. Thank you to those parents and students that were in attendance this week virtually. I also want to thank the teachers that prepared and taught lessons for our students even though they may have been sick or nursing family members that were sick.


If we are remote or in person, your scholar must be present in class. If remote, all students can access their teacher through Schoology unless otherwise stated. If your scholar is having technical difficulties, please communicate those issues to the technology department at 248.209.2060.


Beginning Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2022, I will be out until April 03, 2022 for health reasons. Teacher leaders and staff from Central administration will provide administrative coverage during this period.


We are continuing to ask all families to please report any positive COVID-19 cases with documentation via email to: benefits@southfieldk12.org with a copy to your respective building principal.

Based on the current local and county data, for the health and safety of all within the Southfield Public Schools' community, remote (synchronous) learning will continue January 10-14, 2022. Please know that we understand the weight of this decision and are committed to supporting those in need.


Food Distribution

The district will provide breakfast and lunch meals to any student for the week based on the schedule below. Food distribution will occur at Southfield A&T High School in the circular drive at the Main Entrance between Door 1 and 2.

Monday, January 10, 2022

Time: 12pm – 2pm

Locations: Southfield A&T (front circle driveway) Thompson K-8, Levey, Mac Arthur

Meals: Monday & Tuesday Breakfast and lunch.

Wednesday, January 12, 2022

Time: 10 am – 12pm

Locations: Southfield A&T (front circle driveway) Thompson K-8, Levey, Mac Arthur

Meals: Wednesday, Thursday & Friday Breakfast and lunch.


Childcare Services:

Childcare Services will be provided by Champions beginning on Monday, 01/10/22 through Friday, 1/14/22 from 6:30 AM until 6:00 PM at Birney K-8 school. For those families who may need the service this week, please reach out to Champions at www.discoverchampions.com or call 800-246-2154.

Transportation of Oakland Schools Technical Campus (OSTC) Students:

OSTC students will be picked-up and dropped-off at their regularly scheduled time in the AM and PM. This is the same procedure that is implemented on Remote Fridays.

Transportation of Students with Specialized Needs:

Our students with specialized needs who require transportation to other districts, will receive transportation as regularly scheduled.

Attendance robocalls

If your child has an unexcused absence, you will receive a phone call from the district. If you have any questions, comments or concerns regarding a call you receive, please contact the school’s main office. The number called will be the one listed in MiStar for your child. If you wish to change your phone number in MiStar, you can visit the district website https://www.southfieldk12.org/ and click on Parents & Students. Scroll to Parent Portal (MiStar). Here you will be able to change your phone number or any other information with the exception of your address. If you need to make an address change, you will need to contact the Enrollment Department.


Friday’s will continue to be remote until February. If your scholar is having problems with their technology, please communicate your technology issues to Oakland Schools at 248.209.2060 or via email at oshelpdesk@oakland.k12.mi.us.


Families, there are a number of students that are tardy to school, many coming after 10 am. It is difficult for a scholar to be successful if your student is absent or tardy to class. With that being said, parent/guardian have to sign scholars into school after 9:00 am. If the student is being dropped off via shared ride service (taxi, Uber, Lyft, etc.), a parent/guardian must call Ms. Watkins in the main office at 248.746.0012 from a number that is in MiStar for entry otherwise the student will be turned away. Thank you for your continued support. Together, we can help you and your scholar have a successful year.

Free COVID-19 Testing


Testing done by Grapefruit Testing at:

  • SHSAT Monday - Friday 8:00am - 2:00 pm ; re-open at 3:00 - 7:00 pm
  • Thompson Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 3:30 pm ; re-open at 4:30 - 7:00 pm
  • SHSAT & Thompson Saturday and Sunday 7:30 am - 7:00 pm


Below is the consent links for COVID 19 testing that must be completed before testing. Anyone under the age of 18 must have a guardian/parent fill this out prior to testing. As long as form is completed the student can be tested.

Free Breakfast and Lunch

I want to remind you that all students can receive a healthy breakfast and lunch each day. We are also working to present a more lunch options for students to choose from.

If you choose not to have your student participate in the free lunch program this school year, we ask that you send them with a lunch and refrain from dropping off lunches during the day. Also, we will not allow rideshare food services (Uber Eats, DoorDash, etc.) to deliver lunches to school.


Late Arrival/Early Pickup

If your scholar will be late to school (after 7:20 am), please inform the main office (248.726.0013) of your scholar’s arrival time.

If your scholar needs to be picked up early, you must call the main office from a number that is in Mistar. Please update your information in Mistar if you have not done so. Calling from a number in Mistar ensures us that the person on the telephone is connected to the student. This practice will continue until parents are allowed in the school.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) released updated guidance related to quarantine, isolation, and COVID-19 in schools.

This form will need to be filled out every day!

Southfield Public Schools has licensed the Frontline Health Portal to provide you with convenient, 24-hour online access to items in your child’s health record. Using a secure username and password, you can view district-designated health information, communicate with our health & wellness staff, review/sign forms, and even provide the district with new information from outside health services received by your child.

MISTAR ANNUAL INFORMATION UPDATE

Welcome to ParentPortal and Southfield Public School's Student Information System, MiStar!

ParentPortal allows you to navigate your child’s record. Inside you’ll see your child(ren)’s name and after clicking on each child you’ll see their grade book, attendance, food service balance, and purchases as well as their emergency contacts, among others.

If you need your Login credentials (PIN and Password), please click on the "Need Your Login Information?" link and be sure to use the email address you have on file. If you need to update your email or any other information in MiStar, you will need to contact our Administrative Assistant, Ms. Watkins at Lolita.Watkins@Southfieldk12.Org

Annual Information Update
Beginning mid-August, please complete the online Annual Information Update packet (in the red letters in the upper right of the screen). This update is taking the place of the packet of information parents had to fill out in the past. Furthermore, in order for your son or daughter to see who their teacher is or receive their schedule, all forms must be completed.
