Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

What a tremendous Walkathon event! I had a great time and was happy to see families enjoying this event together. The number of volunteers that it takes to put on such a wonderful event is truly amazing. This Walkathon was a joint effort by the PTA's of each school and on behalf of the students and staff I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who gave of their time to make the Walkathon a success. Special thanks go to our Walkathon Leaders from both schools, Fernanda Brant (Castro) and Randi Ross (Mistral). They are truly amazing! Watch for next week's newsletter for a complete list of Walkathon volunteers.

Best regards,

Theresa Lambert, Principal Mariano Castro

Attendance Matters – Important Questions and Answers

1) Why does attendance matter?

Attendance at school is directly connected to student achievement. Students who are absent fall behind on that day’s lessons and it’s hard to catch up to the rest of the class. This can lead to feeling frustrated and stressed in class – and being stressed doesn’t help your student learn!

2) What counts as an excused absence?

The following are examples of excused absences:

  • If your student is sick
  • If your student has a medical appointment
  • If your student is attending the funeral of an immediate family member
  • If your student has a court appearance and you have provided written notice in advance

3) How do I let you know that my student will be absent?

  • Call our absence line at 650-526-3590x2
  • Fill out a blue absence form in our office

4) Does it matter if my student is tardy? We were only a little late.

YES, it matters! Being tardy to school delays learning and teaches bad habits.

Punctuality is a great habit to teach children. Just as we have to be on time for work, students need to be on time for school! Help your student build this habit now.

Tardies add up. If your student is frequently late, this can lead to further action at the district level.

Avoid these issues – get your student here on time!

5) I’m having problems getting my student to school on time – who do I talk to?

We have a team here to support your student and you!

Please speak with your student’s teacher, with Principal Lambert, or with Mariano Castro’s facilitator team, Manny Velasco and Ernesto Nassau. We want to work with you to make sure your students are here and learning!

Friday, October 16th is Mismatch Day!

Wear your craziest outfits! Socks with sandals, polka dots with stripes, sandals and tennis shoes! Mix it up! Design the most unusual outfit you can! But most importantly, have fun!

1st Annual Castro Ice Cream Social for all families Friday, October 23rd!

Hosted by the Mariano Castro Student Council in the MUR

ALL STUDENTS AND FAMILIES are welcome to come enjoy a free ice cream after school on Friday, October 23. This is a great time to meet some new families and hang out with your friends after school. Prize drawing for all participants! Hope to see you there!

Box Tops Give Castro $$$

It is the month to turn in Box Tops for Education. Please look on each box, bag, or package you use. Cut out or rip them off and save them. They are on many products. Each one is worth a dime, so they add up quickly as $ dollars for our school.

Ask your friends, family, neighbors, community members and co-workers to look for them. ASK them to collect them in a baggie for you.

Please turn All Box Tops in to the office by Monday, October 26th. Keep collecting for the next submission!
