Healthy Hendo

HCS Health & Wellness Newsletter - March 2018

Message from Henderson County Schools Human Resources Department

It is almost Spring! Spring is a time for new beginnings. A time to slough off the winter blues and start looking forward to warmer, longer days and more sunshine. In this edition of Healthy Hendo we are going to give you new wellness ideas and challenge you to try something new whether it's going to a workout class for the first time, cooking a new healthy dish, organizing that closet, or learning a new money savings technique.

Open Gym Days for Employees

The addition of the Employee Fitness Center has been a huge success. To build on that success, we have developed an "Open Gym" schedule. The "Open Gym" concept allows employees access to a school's gym (North Middle) at designated times during the month.

Employees can participate in different sports such as basketball, volleyball or other game type activities. (Volleyball days have been designated due to the set up requirements). A signed participation waiver is required (attached).

During the month of March, there are several opportunities to participate.

The dates and times scheduled include:
Open Gym Schedule (March) (Sign-in is required each session)
Saturday, March 3rd, 8:00 am to 11:00 am
Wednesday, March 7th, 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Monday, March 12th, 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm (Volleyball)
Saturday, March 17th, 8:00 am to 11:00 am
Monday, March 19th, 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Saturday, March 24th, 8:00 am- 11:00 am (Volleyball)
Wednesday, March 28th, 5:30 pm-8:30 pm

We are still in the preliminary planning phases of this new concept and will keep you to up date of any changes or additions.

Shout out to East Heights teacher Robert Shields for the idea of open gym.

March is Colorectal Screening Month

How can Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month make a difference?

We can use this month to raise awareness about colorectal cancer and take action toward prevention. Communities, organizations, families, and individuals can get involved and spread the word.

Here are just a few ideas:

  • Encourage families to get active together – exercise may help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.
  • Talk to family, friends, and people in your community about the importance of getting screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 50.
  • Encourage people over 50 to use this interactive tool to decide which colorectal cancer screening test they prefer.
  • Ask doctors and nurses to talk to patients age 50 and older about the importance of getting screened.

Colorectal Cancer Statistics

Of cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. It is the third most common cancer in men and in women. For more information, visit Cancer Among Men and Cancer Among Women.

In 2014 (the most recent year numbers are available)—

  • 139,992 people in the United States were diagnosed with colorectal cancer, including 73,396 men and 66,596 women.†
