About the Book
Jacob was an ordinary boy who lived in suburban Florida, until his grandfather was slain. Jacob travels to Wales to learn more about his grandfather's past. He meets a girl named Emma and Emma takes him through a time portal to an orphanage in the 1940s. It turns out that this is no ordinary orphanage; this is an orphanage for children with unusual powers called peculiars. When Jacob is introduced to Miss Peregrine the headmistress, he finds out that his grandfather once stayed at the orphanage. When Jacob travels back to the present, he finds out that there have been mysterious murders happening in the town he's been staying in. He warns Miss Peregrine and she tells him that the murders have been happening because of monsters called Hollows and Wights. This is why they stay in the time loop because it is the only place that keeps them safe from the monsters. Jacob unexpectedly kills one and learns that he too is peculiar because he can see hollows. Miss Peregrine is kidnapped and the book ends with the children having no idea what to do.
Meet the Peculiars
What Did we Learn?
I think that the theme of this book is that everyone is peculiar in their own way and it should be embraced. Jacob doesn't really think he's something special until he meets the peculiars and learns that he is one of them too. He feels like he belongs somewhere.
So how was it?
I would give it 4 out of 5 stars just because it was kind hard to get into. The only interesting part in the beginning was when Jacob's grandfather was murdered. I thought that the photography was stunning and it was intertwined into the story in a beautiful and creative way.
Did you know...
Did you know that they are making a movie out of this book directed by Tim Burton? Its scheduled release date is in Spring of 2016.
