Director of Schools - Parent Issue - February 2023
Director's Corner -
February is a great indicator that we have successfully made it over half-way! As we continue through the second semester, please be sure to monitor your child(s) grades, attendance, and quiz them periodically on the skills they are working on. Being a parent is the most important and rewarding job, but it can also be the most challenging. As educators, we understand how difficult every day life can be. We also know that education is your child(s) key to success, so lets all work together to help ensure that success. Don't forget to check Skyward, communicate with your child(s) teachers, and monitor their daily activities, especially social media.
February is also labeled as the month for "LOVE."
Lets not forget to show the staff how much we truly care and appreciate the things they do. We would like input from our community on staff members that you see who are going above and beyond to support our students and community. You can nominate a staff member for the "People's Choice Award" by emailing their name and an explanation as to why you think this employee deserves the People's Choice Award to katie.johnson@oneidaschools.org.
One employee will be chosen each month!
February People's Choice Award Nominee
Ms. Amy Buttram
Thank you for continuing to go above and beyond for our students and our community!
The start of the second half of the year has proven to be very successful, and I am so excited for what this semester has in store for our students!
Thank you for your support & partnership,
Dr. Jeanny Phillips

February - Show Some Love!
The month of February comes from the Latin word Februarius, meaning "to purify;" however, many people say that this month represents LOVE! Let us celebrate this month by showing acts of kindness, love, and support for one another.
If we portray these things in our daily lives,
it will spill over to the lives of our children.

American Heart Month - February 2023
District Highlights!
January was a great month for Indians athletics
as all of our basketball programs were very successful.
The OMS teams just finished up the TMSAA Area 7 Championships which were hosted this year here at Oneida. Both the Lady Indians and Indians were successful in bringing home hardware. The Lady Indians defeated the Lady Bears of Huntsville 47-34 to win the Area 7 Championship. Lady Indians named to the All-Tournament team were Madi Pike, Aimee Jo Lewallen, Avery Rector, and Tournament MVP Kendall Duncan. They advance to the TMSAA Section 2-A Tournament to take on Soldiers Memorials on Saturday, January 28th at Oneida at 6:00 pm.
The OMS Indians also won the boys Area 7 Championship as they defeated the Bears of Huntsville 40-20. Indians named to the All-Tournament team were Bentley Ellis, Canaan Shoemaker, Ryder Watson, and Tournament MVP Drayton Wade. They advance to the TMSAA Section 2-A Tournament as they will take on Springdale Middle on Saturday, January 28th at Oneida at 7:15 pm.
At OHS, the ladies have continued their successful season. Oneida is 7-2 in the month of January with two games left in the month, Monday the 30th at York and Tuesday the 31st at Jellico. In that span, the Lady Indians went 4-0 in district play and have averaged 62 points per game. Senior Kelsey Pike has averaged 19 points per game during this stretch while freshman Elli West has chipped in just over 10 points per game.
The Indians boys’ team is also on a good path, going 6-3 in the month of January with York and Jellico still on the schedule for the 30th and 31st respectively. They have also went 4-0 in district play during that span and have a two game lead in the district with three games remaining. Oneida has average 70 points per game in January led by Mason Keeton who nets just over 20 points per contest. Freshman Grady Keeton has also been big for the Indians, aiding with nearly 17 points per game.
The high school Lady Indians and Indians have two more home games remaining on their regular season schedule, February 3rd vs. Wartburg and Senior Night on February 10th vs. Oliver Springs. They will then host the TSSAA District 3-A Tournament the following week.
The OHS Pride of the Tribe Marching Band performed for our OMS basketball teams during the TMSAA Area 7 Championships on Thursday, January 26th. We thank them for all of their support for Oneida Athletics. They will be competing in the ETPAA Qualifier for Indoor Percussion on Saturday, January 28th at Lakeway Christian Academy.
