Thank you to all of you who made it to Back to School Night on Tuesday! It was great to see so many families in classrooms and the general session. If you were not able to make it, please don't hesitate to be in touch with myself or your child's teacher. It's so important that we work together to make sure your child has a successful year!
If you were at Back to School Night then you heard about our new District Wellness Policy. This is a multi-year plan and this year we are starting with no food birthday celebrations. We hope to make birthdays fun, fair and easy for all. Think creatively about what else you could do to celebrate your child's birthday in the classroom (Fun!). We hope to create more equity so all students can celebrate without necessarily spending money (Fair!). And hopefully, this policy will make birthday planning easier on all of you (Easy!)! Thank you for your support with this effort.
Last Friday, we had our 2nd annual BEST Day and it was fantastic! New this year, our 6th graders taught the entire school through skits and scripts about the rules and guidelines for every part of campus. They did an amazing job and I heard positive feedback from teachers and students alike. Way to go 6th graders! And a special thank you to 6th grade teachers for your help in preparing our students to teach the whole school the same language and rules for our school.
We hired a new basketball coach for girls and boys basketball this year! Some of you may know Alyssa Holiday from after school care and we are lucky to have her coaching both seasons this year. Our girls basketball tryouts are Tuesday, September 3rd at 7:30am in the MPR. In the past, Sequoia has done early morning tryouts and practices in order to leave after school time available for other sports or activities students and families may have going on in September and October. Ms. Holiday stopped by all the 5th and 6th grade classrooms today to introduce herself and encourage any GIRLS to tryout next week. Be on the lookout for a permission slip for tryouts! (The boys season is after the conclusion of the girls season-November time frame).
As a reminder, in the large parking lot the right lane is for picking students up and the left lane is for driving through. Please do not stop in the left lane to pick up students as this becomes a safety issue. Please be patient and listen to our school staff so students get to cars safely and cars move through the parking lot quickly.
Enjoy the long weekend! See you on Tuesday!
