Notes from the LMC
A Fall Update
October in Review
- 13 classes completed the Creepy Camp Out BreakoutEDU box that had students simplifying a s'more recipe, packing a cooler, setting up at tent, and analyzing a story in order to get to the bottom of the Hairy Toe urban legend.
- All 9 of the 7th grade social studies classes completed a digital BreakoutEDU challenge called Zombie Breakout. Acting as genetic scientists, students had to solve puzzles in order to save the city from a zombie apocalypse.
- 8th grade science classes completed an online resources scavenger hunt about astronomy highlighting SCIENCEFLIX, FACTCITE, & GROLIER ONLINE (all of which we PAY for, so please check them out if you haven't!)
- Tammy and I finished up our Digital Citizenship Unit with the 6th grade MIW classes. Students created Super Digital Citizen Comic Strips.
Total Number of Checkouts for the Month: 715
November Updates
- November has brought the return of our Library Cafe! We have 9 reservations for this month and several in December.
- In addition to the book tasting with the 6th graders, we are hosting Speed Dating Events with the 7th and 8th grade Systems classes.
- We finally opened the doors to the Makerspace and hosted a 6th grade reward event and had the 8th graders who stayed here during DC week come and create models of monuments.
- BOOK BINGO HAS BEGUN! We've distributed nearly 100 Bingo boards so far, and we are still encouraging all readers (students and staff) to take a shot at it. We've already had our first student earn a BINGO by being an open-minded reader who isn't afraid to take a risk and try something new (He read all the way down the right hand column: A book with a # in it; A Book with a Mystery; A book of nonfiction; a graphic novel; a book with a blue cover) ! Way to go Chris S. in 6th grade! * See attached slide show for more info.*
We have already checked out 510 books this month!
December Preview
- We have more Book Tastings/ Speed Dating Events scheduled.
- On December 4th, I will be attending the Christa McAuliffe Technology Conference and attending the following sessions: "What's the Fuss about Jamboard?", "Digital Learning Mixtape: Transforming Teaching with Technology", "Librarians: Bartenders of the Book Collection!" & "#GoogleAddict 4.0" I can't wait to come back and put what I learn into action!
- To celebrate Computer Science Education Week we will be hosting 24 (so far) periods of The Hour of Code. This year students will be coding their own superheroes or creating their perfect world.
- Tammy and I will both be helping facilitate a Breakout Box Challenge for the sixth grade science classes.
Last Chance to Make with Me
The makerspace has a variety of random resources (see below) and can accommodate roughly 15 kids without spilling out into the library media center. If you can think of a way that your students would benefit from these resources and space (the makerspace could be a station for part of your class while the other part stays in the room for...xyz; the whole class could come down and half could be in the library doing one thing while the other half makes something), please let me know. I would love to sit down an and collaborate a makerspace experience for January.
