DHS Weekly Update
Thursday, November 17, 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
DHS Families,
My update this week is a few reminders and a few requests. I hope you all have a great week off!
- PTSA is looking for someone to volunteer to lead the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. There are some great things going on here at DHS and across the district that PTSA would love to be a part of. Please email Christa Godstad (christa.gogstad@gmail.com) if you have any questions or are interested.
- During this season of giving, don't forget to connect your passage fundraisers to the DHS PTSA. Most of these can be done online now - Amazon Smile, Publix, and Kroger! PTSA does so much for the DHS teachers and students so please support them with these passive fundraisers.
- Opaque Bags - Just a reminder that students are only allowed to carry clear backpacks to their classrooms. If they come to school with a non-clear bag, they must have a locker and put their items in it before class starts and then at the end of the day after dismissal. Students found to be in violation of this will have their bags confiscated until the end of the day and/or searched by admin to insure the safety and security of our building.
I hope to see everyone at the 2nd round of football playoffs tomorrow night. Remember, DBB membership cards are not valid for playoff games per GHSA and the cost of admission is $10.00.
Rochelle L. Lofstrand, Principal

Transfers to Decatur Virtual Academy
The window is now open for students grades 3-12 to transfer to Decatur Virtual Academy (DVA) for the Spring 2023 semester.
To allow adequate time to complete online courses, the registration deadline for Spring semester enrollment is December 20, 2022. From October 7th until December 20th, families may request a transfer to online learning for the Spring Semester by completing this form.
Space is limited. Once we are full, families will be on a wait list. This form only can be completed by a parent or guardian who has educational rights for a CSD student. Once the form is completed, Ms. Whatley will schedule a time to discuss courses, attendance policy, and let you know if there is space for your student.
Please review the Decatur Virtual Academy Handbook prior to speaking with Ms. Whatley (hwhatley@csdecatur.net).

Bulldog Football Wins in Rd. 1 to Advance in State Playoffs!
Congratulations to our Decatur Bulldog Football team who advanced to Round 2 of the GHSA State Playoffs after a big win against Harris County on Friday night. The stadium was energized from the start as our cheerleaders and band showed up to support our team. The Bulldogs took advantage of this energy and jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead after a blocked punt was returned for a touchdown by Asa Bailey, followed by a strip and a score by Malachi Miller. Kenric Lanier added to the scoring with an amazing catch and run for a touchdown to widen the Bulldogs' lead. The defense was stingy all night, giving the Harris County offense all they could handle. The game ended with a score of 33-20.
The Bulldogs advance to Round 2 and will face Coffee County this Friday evening at the Decatur High School Stadium. Kickoff will be at 7:30 pm. All tickets for Round 2 are $10 and can be found at GoFan.co. Booster Passes and teacher IDs are not accepted at GHSA playoff games.
The Bulldogs have won 6 games in a row! Great job, Bulldogs! Let's keep the momentum going on Friday!!

Nutrition Department
The Nutrition Department is in the process of reaching out to parents about student negative meal balances. These efforts to send the low-balance communications will continue weekly through the automated infinite campus messenger or a personal phone call. Some accounts may have had outstanding balances prior to being approved for free or reduced meal benefits. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Nekee Mathis at nmathis@csdecatur.net. or (470) 237- 0368 ext 7607.
Note: A free and reduced lunch application can be completed anytime during the school year. Currently, the district policy allows students to receive meals, not extra items, for example, i.e. bag of chips. However, a child's negative meal balance will continue to incur debt as they receive meals. Click on the links below if you need help adding a reminder to your school email account, adding a low balance alert on your nutrition meal account, and/or adding funds to your school nutrition account.
Extended Day Tutoring Session 1 Ends
Today, Thursday, November 17, is the last day of Extended Day Tutoring for Session 1. Session 2 will begin in February 2023. Eligible students will receive an invitation letter.

Giving Tuesday is coming up on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, and is a global day of generosity – a day to support the causes that are meaningful to you and your community. With a donation to DEF, you are helping us support Decatur’s kids. It’s our mission to help EVERY student in Decatur learn and thrive. Every kid learns differently; every kid has different needs. We help students through our programs that address racial and economic inequity, opportunity gaps, food insecurity, and behavioral health needs.
Please consider making a donation of any amount (every dollar counts) at www.decatureducationfoundation.org/donate. Together we make a difference for our kids.
Are you great at math, science or languages? Your skills could help a Decatur student in just one hour per week as a Virtual Pal Tutor! We pair 2nd-8th grade students with upper high school or adult tutors to help with homework, organization and motivation. It’s an easy way to give back to your community in a meaningful way (and for high school students to earn volunteer hours).

Can’t volunteer but want to help out? You can donate to our Lighten the Load program which keeps the snack pantry stocked at Beacon Hill Middle School. For those families in our community experiencing food insecurity, we also have a weekend backpack program. Both have unique Amazon wish lists that are updated monthly.
