An e-newsletter from Bel Air Elementary School

November 13, 2020

Big picture

Hello Bel Air families,

I hope you are doing well and your families are healthy. Today you received communication from Superintendent Lennox announcing our Blended Learning students will begin Distance Learning on December 1. In an effort to prepare for the transition, all teachers will be meeting on Friday, November 20 and Monday, November 30 to prepare for the change in learning models. This means there will be no school for all elementary students (current blended and distance students) those two days.

Please know the staff at Bel Air Elementary are focused on supporting students and families through this transition into a successful distance learning experience. You will receive more information detailing the expectations for our distance learners as our plans evolve. Teachers will share more specific information as those details are finalized during their planning days on Friday, November 20, and Monday, November 30.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Second Step

This month, our school wide theme is empathy. In our morning announcements we’ll be reminding students to have empathy, identify their own and others’ feelings, notice and respect the same and different feelings, and show compassion. Compassion involves saying kind words or doing something helpful to show you care how another person feels. When students can identify, understand, and respond in a caring way to how someone else is feeling, it helps create a positive and accepting school climate.

Second Step lessons specifically teach about empathy. You’ll be receiving Home Links describing why empathy is important and including fun activities to do with your child to help them identify feelings and practice showing empathy and compassion. We hope you find them helpful.

Please tell your child’s teacher if you have any questions about how you can help your child learn to identify feelings and show empathy and compassion at home.

MVSEF’s Support During COVID

As the Mounds View School District takes important measures to plan for the upcoming school year, our alumni, parents, and community members have asked how they can help during this unsettled time. Accordingly, the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation will partner with the school district to raise funds to cover expenses in these unprecedented circumstances.

Mounds View School District leadership has identified the need for unrestricted resources that will ensure reliable internet access for students and the necessary technology to support learning whether it be at home or in school. Additional expenses will also likely be incurred to safeguard our staff and students in the schools and contributions will be equitably directed accordingly.

The MVSEF’s commitment to the district spans over thirty years and at no time has our support been more vital given the multitude of challenges confronting our school community. If you are interested in making a donation to the MVSEF, please click here. Your contribution will provide the district much needed flexibility to respond to student’s needs.

Did you reply ‘STOP’ to a text message?

Did we send you one-too-many text messages that caused you to reply ‘STOP,’ in frustration? If so, please know that replying ‘STOP’ to a single text message automatically unsubscribes you from receiving all future text messages from any school or District office. Please consider resubscribing so you can receive future emergency notifications, and we’ll do our best to limit our text messages to critically urgent information that is as targeted as possible. To resubscribe, simply call or email any school main office and ask to be resubscribed to all text messages.

Students Can Now Receive Text Alerts

Parents, you can now add your child's cell phone number to ParentVUE so they can receive text messages and robo-calls about school closings, significantly delayed school buses, emergencies and other alerts. To subscribe your student to these occasional urgent messages, read the easy instructions here.
