Message from the Principal
Dear Central Road Families,
Thank you for your support, while we gathered all of the materials for students. A huge thank you to all of our teachers for organizing all of the student materials for pick-up.
The pick-up dates are as follows:
Monday, May 18th- 8:30-3:00- Last names A-M
Tuesday, May 19th- 8:30-3:00- Last names N-Z
Our goal is to provide families with their supplies in a quick and efficient manner, while following social distancing guidelines, to ensure the safety of our staff and families.
Please follow these steps to assist us with materials distribution:
Place a sign on your dashboard with your child(ren)’s name.
Place all items that need to be returned to Central Road in your trunk. Items include:
Band instruments, library books, Battle of the Books materials.
When you arrive at Central Road, pull up to the flagpole. A staff member will greet you.
Stay in your car.
Open your trunk
Staff members will go into our gym to obtain your child’s items. We appreciate your patience.
Staff will place the supplies into your trunk and take out items that are being returned to school.
Please bring back items that belong to classroom teachers, and label them with a post-it note, so we can return them to the correct staff member.
6th Grade Families: Please pull up to Door 4. A PTA volunteer will provide you with a gift bag for your child’s end of year celebration.
We are not collecting Chromebooks at this time, for students who are returning to Central Road. Please keep your child’s device until next school year. If your family is moving to another school, please return the Chromebook.
Thank you for your partnership.
Warmly,
Patti Van Winkle
Sinceramente,
Patti Van Winkle
Central Road Staff Parade
Our route will be based on the current bus routes and will be shared with families next week. We will also drive through our walking community.
Please plan on attending this event! We ask families to follow social distancing guidelines and to stay at least 6 feet apart from other families.
We can't wait to see our students!
Brain Plasticity and Reading
There has been a great deal of research over the last decade on brain plasticity. According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine the concept of brain plasticity is the foundation to understanding that intelligence can be developed.
Explicitly teaching your child that their brain’s capacity to change, can increase their motivation to learn. According to Marcus Conyers and Donna Wilson, teaching your child an understanding of brain plasticity can help them develop a growth mindset. This growth mindset can motivate students to “drive their brains.” Driving their brains will impact their reading ability, math and of course writing. By the way parents all of this is true for you as well.
Incorporating growth mindset talk with your child at home can improve your child’s ability to learn a range of metacognitive and cognitive strategies. What are metacognitive and cognitive strategies? Metacognition means simply to think about your thinking. Questions that can be posed to your child while they are reading that help teach metacognition:
When reading, ask your child to stop from time to time to reflect on what they learned. Ask them what did you find out? Do you think that’s important and why or why not?
Ask your child or you describe to your child what you see in your mind as you read. How does what is being seen in your mind help you understand the story?
- Cognition simply means thinking. Thinking about how one thinks. Some examples you can ask your child to help them think about their thinking are: How best do you memorize something?
A. Do you read it over and over again?
B.. Do you need to write it over and over again?
C. Do you need to say it out loud over and over again?
Having these kinds of discussions with your child can help them understand that their brain grows and changes just like the muscles in their body and that they have control over the growth of their brain.
Research on brain plasticity, or growth mindset, continues to suggest that there is a significant impact on student achievement and improves a child’s reading ability.
An excellent children’s book on how the brain works is:

Community Wide Supply Drive
Wow, Central Road families! Our community donated a bus full of food and cleaning supplies. Thank you for making a huge impact on families across the district. A special thank you to our volunteers who helped collect the items from our families.
Google Meets Student Expectations
Appropriate classroom behavior, apparel and language is expected.
Log into your meeting from a distraction free, quiet environment.
Please keep your audio on mute until you want to speak. This will help to limit background noise.
If you would like to speak or answer a question, raise your hand in the video. Then unmute yourself after you are called on.
If you would like to use the chat box, remember that it is public and a record of the chat is kept by the district.
If the teacher calls on you, unmute, answer the question, then mute again
Have paper and a pen or pencil handy to take notes.
Make sure your video is on so we can see your happy face.
Wait for the teacher to dismiss you (just like in the classroom).
