Kids Deserve It! Chapter Three
This week, let's bridge the theme of culture from Kids Deserve It! with Jon Gordon’s book, The Power of a Positive Team. Nesloney and Adam Welcome discuss the traditions that often form the base of our schools' culture. The age of doing things because we always have is being challenged by dabbing into technology and collaboration, taking risks to prepare our students for the 21st Century. Do you have a thinking partner? Do you have an idea you would like to discuss or move forward? Great! Bring the idea with to your 15 minute meeting! As Nesloney and Welcome state, "You have the same choice every day. You can choose what's always been done-the safe and easy. Or, you can choose what's less simple, potentially more difficult, and absolutely more rewarding" (34.)Think of the impact your choices make on students and on culture here in Richmond. As the duo continues, "We've got to continually push ourselves, grow, innovate, and find ways to be different!" When is the last time you stepped out of your comfort zone? How will encouraging each other and our students change our culture? Can we build trust in the process? “I now know that building a great team begins with creating a great culture. I know that, as a team, you are always creating your culture. You are creating culture every moment of every day by what you think, say, and do. It doesn’t matter what your culture was like yesterday or last year. What matters is what you are doing to create it today,” Gordon states. He also shares six ways we can do this:
- Make your bus great - You can decide to make your little bus great. Start with something little, and as Dana would say, "Sometimes something little goes a long, long way!"
- Make your culture a priority - We can’t view work to improve and maintain positive culture as ‘another thing on our plates’. It is the plate - it affects everything.
- Invest in the root (and not the fruit) - When we focus too closely on results, we can lose sight of how we get them. Think of being a bucket filler, focusing on Trust and relationship building. How can you invest in the buckets of your High Five?
- Decide to be vitamin C - We can think of ourselves and our teammates as either being germs or vitamin C...
- The power is on the inside - To borrow a sports metaphor, strong teams stand up better to tough opponents. What you do for our team makes our team stronger.
- What do we want to be? - What do you want to be known for? What kind of team do you want to be?
